Dress material (stupid question)

I read somewhere (probably on TK) that the bridesmaids dresses should not be in a fabric that is more formal than the bride's dress. It got me thinking, if the three dresses that I'm possibly choosing are all organza, what fabrics are "less formal" than my dress? I was going to put my girls in satin dresses, but now I don't know. Is there a chart that lists fabrics from "most formal" to "least formal?"  Sorry for the dumb question.

    Satin is definitely considered more formal than organza, but if you and your bridesmaids love a satin dress, just be glad you found a good one.   I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Generally I don't notice bridesmaid dresses unless they are just butt ugly.  I rarely take note of the fabric.

    My dress is organza and the dress my bridesmaids picked out (although we are going to take a look at some others) was organza over satin. I don't think you really have anything to worry about  though, all eyes will be on you that day, no matter what they wear they won't outshine you & I doubt anyone will be saying "OMG I can't believe those BMs chose that fabric". So, I agree with PP, find something you all like and just make sure the dresses all compliment each other in fabric, style & color.

    Thanks for the feedback, ladies. I wanted to make sure I wasn't breaking any unwritten etiquette rule by putting them in a fabric that's more formal than mine! :)

    I'm having the same dilemma. My dress is silk organza and the girls like a dress that looks way to fancy compared to mine. Id like to stay away from satin if we can.
