Getting in Shape

Do I maintain or continue to lose?

So I bought my dress this past Saturday and since I was in between sizes I bought the next size larger just to be safe.  It comes in May 31.  Once it comes in a have an appointment for the first week in June to meet with the seamstress.  My question is that once I meet with the seamstress do I try to just maintain weight.  I would be afraid that if I continue to lose weight my dress may end up being too big.  any ideas or suggestions?  I hate to put everything on hold and just maintain my weight after all the work to lose. (and I still would like to lose more)

Re: Do I maintain or continue to lose?

  • Your tailor will be able to advise you better on this.  It really depends on the style of your dress (i.e. corset back or zip) and how much give and take there is, I would think.

  • I have heard that you can only really alter dresses one or two sizes before you lose a lot of the detailing/shape of the dress, etc. I have no idea how true this is, but like jenb said asking your seamstress would be the best way to go.

There are a lot of us here with this dilemma, including me. This is what I'm doing: I'm gong to lose as much weight as I can because I need to get healthy. If it's to the point where I need to buy off the rack or order a new dress, then fine, but I'm getting healthy for me.

  • From what I've heard, most seamstresses can continue to alter the dress until about a week before the wedding.  Definitely talk to your seamstress, but I personally plan to lose as much as I can before the first fitting (within reason of course) and then continue on my weight loss plan until I get to my goal weight all the way to the wedding.

[QUOTE]I'm sure this response isn't going to be popular, but I really don't care... Are you serious? Sure, you spent a lot of money (I assume) on that dress, but this is your physical health you're talking about! Unless you're already at the ideal weight for someone your height/age, then the priority should be your health and not a dress that can honestly always be replaced. Your body can't. You have the will-power to keep losing, which is a major issue for a lot of women. Don't let these other minor issues stand in the way of you bettering yourself. I know the dress is probably very important to you, but 5 or 10 years from now, the dress you wore for 1 day won't even come close to trumping your health benefits from getting your body to where it needed to be. Jumping off of soapbox.  ;)

I agree, it depends on how much you have to lose.
  • Whether your dress can be tailored to fit you depends on the dress, the seamstress, and how much weight you lose (or rather, how many inches).  That said, if you want to keep losing, keep losing!  I know people make a huge deal about the wedding dress, but if you're 20lbs lighter and healthier, people will notice that more!!!
