Generations of wedding pictures

I thought it could be really nice to tie our wedding back to tradition by including wedding photos of FI and my parents, grandparents, and in my case, I have great-great grandparents.  I was thinking of putting them in frames and positioning them on a table, and then maybe include a little card near each explaining who they are, like, "Erica's Great-Grandparents, paternal grandfather" kind of thing.  I think in total we're going to have a total of 10 or so pictures...has anyone ever seen this before?  Do you think it would work?  I mentioned to FI that maybe I should draw out a quick pedigree or something to should the lineage and provide some context, but FI told me that would imply there are no other family members and it's a bad idea.  I also considered a nice album of sorts to hold all the pics, which would also be a nice heirloom to pass down.  Thoughts?

  • I've seen similar things and I think it's a beautiful way to represent both of your families and the different marriages over the years.
  • We are doing this as well! They will be on the guest book table (that is the current plan anyway). I love the idea of having a sign under each so everyone knows the relation. :)

  • So then just a little sign under each?  I have two sets of great grandparents and grandparents so I just don't want it to be confusing, but maybe like you said no one really cares!

  • Ive seen it done at many weddings, and I think its such a cute idea!

  • I think it is a great idea. My friend that just got married did it and my sister also did something similar last year when she got married. I love looking at old pictures so like Tara said your friends will like to look at them.
  • My best friend did this and everyone loved it.  She just set up a small table with the pictures...I don't think she labeled the people, but that is a great idea.

I would like to do this, but I think it would be awkward because Fi's parents are no longer together...  :(

  • I wanted to do this.. but my mom looked at me like I was crazy when I asked her for a wedding photo. She didn't like the idea (My parents are divorced)
  • I like the idea!  I've thought of doing the same thing.
  • I like the frames and a small sign with "Erica's Grandparents", people in your family will know your lineage and likewise him. Friends will just like looking at old pictures.

  • I have thought of doing this. I hadn't decided how far back I will take it or just included our parents wedding day pictures.

  • I have seen it done and I think it is a nice touch.  We are also going to be doing it as well. In my parents' house my grandparents wedding pictures have always been in frames, I love looking at them!

  • We plan on doing this as well.  I made small tented cards (escort card size) identifying the people in the pictures.  Our plan is to put an engagement picture in the center of the table and put the family pictures on each corresponding side, like so:

    my grandparents - my parents - us - C's parents - C's grandparents

I don't know here, but rather than put a wedding pic of the divorced parents, what about a pic of FI and a parent on each side?  That way it's not a picture that is dredging up bad memories but instead is representing that FI came from both parents?  I know some divorces are pretty ugly, but this might be a nice way to honor each of FI's parent without making it akward.
