NWR: Dog Gender

I know we have lots of dog owners on here, so I thought I would ask the question. I posted about this a while back, but we've decided to get a puppy. At first we thought we wanted a female, now I'm thinking a male. So, do you have a preference between male and female, and if so why? Go.

Re: NWR: Dog Gender

  • FEMALE.  They don't pee everywhere!

  • Female. But maybe that is because we've only ever had female dogs. Personally I have never encountered a male dog as sweet as a female dog, but maybe that's just me. But I'm very biased, because Zoey is the best dog ever.

  • I always had female dogs before Copper.

If you get them as a puppy I would probably go male, because you aren't supposed to spay a female before they go into heat, and that's messy.

That being said when Copper goes to doggy heaven, I definitely want a girl dog.

  • I wanted a girl, but FELL IN LOVE with my boy puppy at the shelter. He was 4 months old and had just been neutered. I really haven't had any problems, and I think when you get them neutered young they are real low on those instincts.
It took him a year until he even figured out how to lift his leg to pee (and he still mostly squats). He is 2 now and within the last month started humping FI's leg but we put a hard stop to it, and now he doesn't do it anymore.
I had a girl dog growing up, and in my experience they aren't that different. We say that McFly is the canine equivalent to Timm Gunn because he's such a freaking pansy and we are pretty sure that he loves fashion.

I think more important than boy vs girl is breed. I wish I had done a little more breed research, to be honest. Granted, MF's dna test told us something completely different than what we learned at the shelter, so it may have not done us any good anyways. Still, I have learned a lot the past 2 years about breeds and I will make a lot more knowldgeable decision next time.

GAH sorry so long... I am obsessed with all things canine.
  • We have a female dog. One reason I chose a female was she wouldn't have to pee on every tree or mailbox she saw. I've heard some pros and cons about both male and female dogs. But to be honest I think alot of that depends on the bread of dog. For instance males are supposed to be more clingy and want attention more than the typical independent female dog. Not so in my case Bella wants tons of attention and is always in my lap.
Growing up we've had both female and male dogs of different breads and I think the bread of dog plays more into it than anything.
Either way your going to love love love it. You'll probably instantly have a conection with one immediatly. We had Bella picked out before we picked her up and she had a sister that hadn't been sold yet, I think the owner didn't want to par twith Bella but I immediately fell in love with her, even though I held and played with her sister.

  • Agree totally on breed. We had a female dog growing up (cocker spaniel), and she was a witch to everyone except my parents. She was extremely territoral and snapped all the time. On the other hand, before I met Matt, my brother and I had a house together and he had a male lab, who I adore more than life itself. He still, at 8, is extremely hyper and pees everywhere, but he was never Neutered, so I think that has a lot to do with his issues. We're getting a golden retriever, and fro. The research i've done, can't seem to find a major difference one way or the other. Like Carrie mentioned, I think we're going to let our hearts make that decision based on which one we bond with, as they have a boy and a girl. Can't wait to have this little sucker in my hands!!

When we went to the vet the other day, we started talking about neutering Copper (he's about 10-ish). The vet said that neutering him at this point wouldn't change anything because his behavior is habit rather than testosterone. <div>
</div><div>I would *think* that would apply to an 8 year old but I'm no vet!</div>

  • We have 3 males now, however I got "stuck" with the first cause he was the last free puppy in the box. Best thing that could have ever happened cause Jeter wants nothing but love (it may also be the schnauzer or beagle in him that makes him that way.)

Toby, our middle child, was complete opposite from Jeter and I think part of my problem with him was he didn't get neutered til he was 3, so he is a little aggressive when he plays with the other two. He's the most independent too - we relate him to a cat with his mannerisms. Also, terriers tend to be a-holes (my mom's Westie was a total B up til the day she died)

Bourbon, our 6 month old, just got fixed and is gentle but he doesn't understand how big he is. Like Jeter, he just wants to be loved and cuddled.

I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

  • I saw the cutest white malteese puppy while I was eating at Taco Diner yesterday. I want one so badly! I've only ever had male dogs and loved them. I always hear about girl dogs being moody. Although I've never had one myself.

  • H and I are trying to find our first dog, and I think I am being too picky, because I can't find one no matter how much I look. :( My parents always had girl dogs -- in fact I don't think I've ever been around a boy dog because everyone I know has girl dogs.

I know there was a knottie that used to be on the boards that fostered dogs -- or at least knew about dog adoptions. If you're out there and have any scoop on female small-sized, non-puppy, non-aggressive (aka ok with small kids) dogs -- please page or PM me!

Are you thinking of Texan Treasure?

I'm scared to death I'm going to make an emotional decision and pick a puppy because of how bad I want one, instrad of making sure we wait for the right one! My work meeting ran late tonight, so I didn't get to go, now I have to wait until Wednesday night!

I'm late to the game but here's my input:

I've always been told that most dogs bond more with humans of the opposite sex.  My FI's dog is a girl and she likes me but LOVES FI.  My dogs are boys who like FI but LOVE me.  My sister has one of each and her boy dog is the one who wants to be near her more often.

That being said - if you get a boy dog get him neutered as soon as your vet allows (it will depend on size of the dog).  My older boy has never been neutered and he's a pain in the butt about marking inside the house.  He was a stray though and the behaviour was already learned before I found him.  My baby was neutered at 6 months and he thinks he's a human - wants to be in my lap constantly, never pees in the house, etc.

One big thing to keep in mind about puppies - the rambunctious one fighting all the others for attention and being the most crazy is really cute - in a puppy.  Think about whether you're still going to think that's cute 24 hours a day as an adult dog.
