Cakes!

This is my current project.  Help!  Tell me about yours.  Who did it or is doing it?  Flavors?   Inspiration?  How many tastings did you do before you picked?  Anything else that'd be interesting to know??!

I'm so glad you brought this up Kelly! I am clueless when it comes to bakeries in Toledo since we live in NC. All I know is I want a red velvet cake. And I DO NOT want fondent (I know it looks good but it doesnt taste as good as butter cream or cream cheese!). I don't know how I feel about ribbons and other deocrations (i don't like non-edible decor on a cake). Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

YUM!  This is a FUN part of the process!! :):)

I did tastings at 3, no wait maybe 4 total bakeries before making my final decision.  I went with Kristy from the Bake Shop and I could not be happier with my choice!!!  She is as sweet as can be, plus her cakes are delicious, GORGEOUS and by far the cheapest I could find anywhere!!

We just did simple white and chocolate (alternating layers) but she offers all sorts of awesome flavors and fillings.   She was open to ANY design idea I had, and she totally exceeded my expectations with the design she came up with based on my inspiration.   Plus she makes her buttercream look smoother than fondant - it's incredible!

She just recently started a website, here:  http://kristysbakeshop.com/
You can see a lot of her work, and get her contact info too. :):)

Here's our cake on her website:  http://www.kristysbakeshop.com/galleries/wedding/pages/l_95117c267bce46f4b%23100C236.htm

I am using Creative Confections.  We are doing a three tiered wedding cake, along with 4 cheesecakes! The wedding cake with a layer each of chocolate, banana, and almond cakes.  And the cheesecakes will be one each of chocolate chip, plain, raspberry and another one I forgot.  She makes a really good fondant and we are having that on the cake.  I dont have any pictures of the cake though :( It is three tiered, a champagne color with white scrolling and two fondant bows with a brooch on each bow.

I am thinking about adding a few other desserts to our cake table as welll...maybe cookies or brownies?  That way there is a big selection for everyone.

Amanda has been great to work with and she is super nice.  Are you giong to I Do at the Zoo this weekend?  She will have a booth out with samples.

We only did one tasting because we liked her so much!  That won't be stopping us from taste testing some cake at the bridal show this weekend, though!

Her pricing is pretty good...I know Abbey had a cake recommendation for someone who was a little cheaper than Amanda.

Anyway, good luck and have fun tasting!

Brieschke's Bakery in Sylvania ($1.85 slice).  I have some inspiration pics in my Bio.  We're doing chocolate, white and raspberry flavors.

No tasting because I've had their cakes for several occassions (bridal shower for instance)

Kat, If you're looking for someone who doesn't do fondant, Brieschke's Bakery <strong>refuses</strong> to do fondant.  I hate fondant, too.  That's one of the reasons why I chose this bakery.  They do buttercream frosting, and I am pretty sure they have a red velvet flavor.

They're on Main St in Sylvania.

I've used them for several occassions, and I've always been happy with how everything tasted and turned out.

Edit: In contrast, Eston's Bakery I believe *ONLY* does fondant, and they were charging ~$4/slice, and you can't really pick your own cake there.  Brieschke's will design anything you want.

Wixey's bakery is also very good, and I believe will design whatever you want.  They were slightly more expensive than Brieschke's.

Kristy from the Bake Shop!  Her buttercream frosting looks as smooth as fondant, she is so fun to work with, and her cakes are INEXPENSIVE.  It was $1.10/slice when I used her.

We had marble cake and my husband and I still talk about how good it was.

Check out my bio for a review and pic of our cake!

I am using Cherry Lane Cakes (http://www.cherrylanecakes.com/) by Cindy Woodbury.  We are doing three tiers each a different flavor with a different filling, I know I won't remember them all correctly, but I think it is:
Top: Carrot Cake w/cream cheese filling
    Middle: Strawberry w/vanilla
Bottom: Cinnamon Streusel w/cream cheese (?)

The only tasting I had before booking her was my sisters wedding and a bridal show.  She did host a tasting for all of her brides at the Rossford Community Center earlier this year and she had whatever flavors we requested on hand.

We are (gasp!) doing fondant, but that is because we are having a small cake and cupcakes.  So the guests will be eating cupcakes mostly.  I would never punish all of my guests with fondant even though the stuff Cindy uses isn't so bad.  She has several types of icing to choose from.

Cindy has been great to work with so far.  She even told me my cake topper  (which is slightly heavier than average) was no problem to deal with when another bakery refused to put it on the cake (She said anyone who couldn't do it was just being lazy!)

This was my cake inspiration.  It will be a lilac color instead of red and we had a topper like this custom made on etsy.  The topper could be done with fondant (and it was in this picture) but we wanted to have the ghosts to keep for halloween decorations.  This is the only halloween element to our 10/30 wedding though!

Eston's did our cake.  They don't only do fondant - ours was buttercream.  Their cake is delicious.  We had Streawberries & Creme and Chocolate Mousse.  Our cake was included in our reception package at Tamaron in 2008, so I'm not sure of their pricing, but I know they are not the cheapest in town.  There are a bunch of pictures of our cake in my Married Bio: http://brittonandjimbio.weebly.com/reception-details.html.

Wixey's also makes yummy cake, and I've heard that Thrush's cake is good, too.

We are using Eston's... We had the strawberries and cream for my shower and white silk and chocolate dipped strawberry for the reception!!! Everyone has been very helpful there!!
