Tacky or not?

Soooooo I have booked a DJ for our wedding and part of the package deal we booked includes two plasma screens on which they will show a photo montage of us growing up while we dance with our parents. After that, pictures of the ceremony will be uploaded and played as a slideshow.

I keep  going back and forth on whether I should call the DJ up and tell him I don't want the plasma screens. I still have time to back out and am wondering if having them seems tacky. That's my debate.

  • i think it is a cute idea, the only problem with it is guests will be paying attention to the pictures not you guys.

  • I saw the same thing at a wedding I went to last year. I thought it was great since I was actually a guest of someone in the wedding party. Since I did not know the couple personally, it allowed me to see a side of them I wouldn't have otherwise known. I'm sure other more distant family and friends probably felt the same way. I really enjoyed it. Cool

  • Before I saw where you lived, I thought "It's very Jersey."

I'm from New Jersey and this seems pretty common up there.  Tacky?  Sure.  But that's the look for a lot of weddings in Jersey!  :)

Here's a wedding at The Venecian that had screens.  This look just isn't appealing to me, but I'm getting married at a vineyard.

  • I'm from Jersey LOL - we are doing it & yes, it does seem to be very common in this area NY City included.  We will have 4 huge screens down the one long side of the hall that not only will do the montage, but our photographer can stream some pics from the ceremony (which is nice since 1/2 the ppl don't make the ceremony).
My FI wanted this more than me, I felt it was nice, but not a necessity.  I agree that people end up watching the screens instead of you - but my FI is not Fred Astair (not that he is bad), so it takes all the eyes off of him...
  • http://offbeatbride.com/2008/07/tacky <- what I read when I'm concerned no one will like what I'm planning.

I didn't vote because in my circle, yes, this would be seen as tacky. In other places, I know that it isn't. Kinda like the money dance.
  • Jersey girl here too!

I personally wouldn't do it, but that's just not my style overall.  If you want it, go for it.  I wouldn't worry about what guests might think.  It's YOUR wedding.
  • I'm not from Jersey...( WV girl) lol.. I've been to a couple weddings were they had a slide show. One, the slide show played in the back ground while everyone ate and the DJ played. it was really nice. The other one...however... there was no music...no food... we set for about 30-45 minutes watching home videos and pictures, mostly of the bride. Her parents were so proud of her and it was very sweet, but after about 20 minutes, i was sooo bored!
Just make sure you don't have your guest sitting there watching picture after picture of you and ur FI with nothing else to do!

I have seen it done and its adorable. If you do include your pictures and pictures with your family or bridal party escpecially older pictures that no one has thougth about in forever.  Then it incorporates more people and makes it more interesting. The ones I have loved were short and over cocktail hour or in the background at dinner
  • I personally wouldn't do it during the reception, but that's just me. It would be distracting for your guests and they'd be watching the slideshow instead of y'all dancing.

There are two televisions that are off to the side when you first walk into our venue (I know it sounds really weird, but it's not) and our friends who also had their reception there had a slideshow of their engagement photos. I haven't decided if we're doing this or not. It might just be too much to worry about.

    And completely thread jack...
Jeannine, we met with a lighting guy last night and he was trying to get us to go with all these crazy colored lights. I have a feeling we won't be going with him. I want subtle, soft light and he just wasn't listening.
  • I'm on the fence about this one. It sounds like a good idea. But I would fear it would draw attention away from the stars of the party. You and you husband...

  • I like doing slideshows as a background for something else- not when they are an activity that people are forced to watch. Our slideshow will be playing on a screen behind us during dinner (it came with the venue).

  • I voted go for it. But I would not have anything playing while you are dancing. I would have them up there later if people want to watch them.

PS~ How would you have pics of your ceremony that quick? Are you having your reception a while after the wedding?
