Suggestions for alternates to wedding cake and cupcakes

Hi all~

I guess I don't like the idea of just a wedding cake or cupcakes so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for an alternative. I'm not cheap by any means but I just don't want to spend 600-800 on a cake.

Thanks.

How about a dessert table? You could have chocolates, brownies, cupcakes, chocolate fountain, flavored coffees.. a whole variety of things! I am not sure who your caterer is... but they might provide that option. :)

That's a good idea as well. We were also thinking about having an "ethnic" table to sample our different backrounds. My fiance is Mexican so we were thinking about Churros and I am mostly polish so I would figure out a polish dessert.

I have seen a lot of desserts done from pies to a dessert buffet...

you could do the buffet style and still have ethinic desserts and candies for selection

MATC has a bakery program that does cheap desserts so that's something you may want to look into.

I am planning a candy table and will have kolaczki from my family influence.  We will have a wedding cake too because I am too traditional but not necessary otherwise.

I went to a wedding where the Bride and Groom didn't like cake, so they had "wedding pies" they put them on little tiers just like a cake and then everyone got a personal pie.  It was a really cute idea for people who just weren't into cake.  It was so original and the pies were really good!

It would be cheaper than a cake I would assume because you don't need decorating, but I don't know how much the little pies might cost.

We met with a caterer last weekend and we are able to add a dessert table to our meal for only $2pp, and there will be PLENTY of desserts to go around for all.  Desserts will consist of italian cookies, pastries, mini tarts/pies, etc.

We are ordering 15 gallons of custard from Kopps and then our caterer will dish it out and pass it around.  It's only going to run about $200 for 250 guests.  I wanted to do an ice cream bar but our caterer had concerns about the mess and the amount of time that would take.  Everyone seems really excited about the custard and they are willing to make whatever flavor we'd like.  Just call and ask for a manager.

Churros con chocolate are muy excellente!

My fiance and I are mostly polish also - we are thinking of doing lemon poppyseed coffee cakes.

I had never heard of them before but they are a huge favorite in my fiances family.  They have them for every get together.  A bunch of his family lives in different states, and they actually have them mailed to their homes for birthdays, Christmas, Easter etc.  There is a lady in Arcadia WI that makes them and will mail them.  I can get you her info if you are interested.

I grew up with my polish grandmother, and she always made ponskies (not sure of the spelling) and we would dip them in cinnamon and sugar while they were still hot - not sure how you would do that for a wedding though.  It basically just fried bread.

Good luck!  I'm sure you will come up with something great!  We aren't big into the idea of spending that much on cake either, mainly because we don't really like "wedding" cake.  :-)

    The correct spelling is Paczki (pronounced punch-key)<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

Amazing ideas on here from the ice cream bar to the Kopps.  Wow!

Our dinner was international stations.  Dessert therefore was also interactive.  We had chefs preparing flaming Banana's Foster and Cherries Jubiliee.  mmmmmm.

    No one missed a cake.

For the "tradiditon", we did cutting of the cupcake, which was a red velvet cupcake from Metro Market. This was more for sentiment than anything else since we shared that exact same thing on our first date.  We teared up becuase it meant something while our guests raved about flaming dessert table. (which also inclduded mini pastries and a coffee bar with all the condiments including chocolates and syrups.)

Do what you want and what represents you.
    Congratulations.

    Anniversary
