Spain Honeymoon-Tips

Hello All,

Now we are also considering Spain for our honeymoon with a $4000 budget. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go, what to do and any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

</div><div>One of my favorite vacations!  We stayed in Costa del Sol (southern Spain).  The beach is right across the street and there are many, many restaurants and shops within walking distance.  We took day trips to Granada, Seville, Gibraltar, and Morocco.  A little relaxing, a little adventure.  Best of both worlds!  We flew out of NYC on a direct flight to Malaga and stayed a week.  Airfare and hotel cost us about $1200/person in the early fall.  If you want more info, PM me.

  • Avoid Barcelona. Crime is huge there. Pickpockets will rob you blind. Happened to my friend when we were backpacking through there.

<div><font color="#3366ff">If you don't mind renting a car you have a lot of options! I had already been to Madrid and Barcelona before but never the coast or southern region so we knew we wanted to stay south. We flew into Madrid, immediately hopped on a train to Toledo (which I loved for a night--only 30 min ride and feels a world apart from the bustling Madrid) and then picked up a car. We drove to Grenada first (loved it, wished I had more time), then along the coast to Malaga. Hated Malaga...it's a port town and only a portion was decent. We bailed on one of our prepaid hotel nights there and drove to Ronda which was by far, the coolest town we stayed in. Then we drove to Sevilla (also loved), and then dropped the car and took the AVE back up to Madrid for a couple nights. Wish I had gone further west on the coast than Malaga (I opted for it over Marbella and think I would have enjoyed there much more), wish I had more time in Sevilla and Grenada, and am so happy I saw Ronda at sunset.</font></div>

What sort of honeymoon are you hoping to have? Do you want to relax at the beach? Explore bigger cities? Shop? Spend time in museums? Do outdoorsy things?

If you haven't been to Spain before, I'd suggest seeing Madrid (with day trips to Segovia and Toledo), Barcelona and Seville. As far as pickpockets are concerned, they are everywhere and backpackers are targets - don't wear anything on your back on public transportation, or set your purse on the floor or on the backs of chairs and you'll be fine. I definitely wouldn't skip Barcelona b/c of them.

Spain from Madrid to the southern coast is what people typically think of when they think of Spain - sun, paella, bullfighiting, flamenco, etc. The northern coast isn't as well known, but in my opinion is the most stunning part - the mountains, green landscapes, beaches (far fewer tourists than in the south) and seafood can't be beat. Galicia is a gorgeous region, and if you head futher west San Sebastian is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

I lived in Spain for four years and traveled the country pretty extensively, so PM me if you want more info.
  • Thanks, I'll PM you for more info.

My IL have a holiday villa in Menorca which is an Island not too far from Barcolona.  It's lovely, really nice little towns and villages, clear water, great food!

I have a freind in Madrid but sadly haven't made it there yet even though I'm in London.

    Have a great trip!
  • Yes, I second Costa del Sol although it was definitely not sunny when I was there - spring break 2011.  We stayed in Marbella (Marriott), which was absolutely gorgeous.  Just as JoanE2012 mentioned, we took took day trips to Rhonda, Granada, Seville, Gibraltar, and Morocco.  It was a trip of a lifetime and although we missed a day in Spain since we missed our flight to London from the states, we had a blast.  It was a lot of driving, but nothing like spending hours in the car with your best friends.  Private message me if you want more information.  I have TONS of pictures that I could share. Happy planning!
