Is there a difference between cobalt chrome and cobalt wedding rings?

We're looking at a cobalt and it's a little confusing. Some rings we see are labeled as cobalt chrome and others only as cobalt. Are there two different metal types or are these the same thing?

I shouldn't answer this because I am really not sure, but my H had a cobalt ring too. I think they are synonymous.

ETA: When we bought his back in 2011, I don't remember ever hearing them called "cobalt chrome."  Maybe the jewelers got in trouble for trying to pass off "chrome" as something else?  Just a wild guess. In any event, H's ring is terrific. Super comfy and lightweight and has held up perfectly.

  • Cobalt is an element (Co) like pure gold (Au) or Silver (Ag)

Cobalt-chrome is an alloy of elements cobalt and chrome (Co-Cr). I'm not sure exactly what that changes (the coloring/strength/weight/etc) but it's like how rose gold is gold and copper (Au-Cu) or brass is copper and zinc (Cu-Zn).

Thanks. From a jeweler a few days ago, he said they are the same for rings and it was just difference in naming in the industry.
