Carnival conquest

Has anyone been on cruise to Jamaica via Carnival Conquest? How was the ship and recommend excursions in Jamaica, Cozumel or Grand Cayman?

Have you cruised before? I've taken several and sorry to say, Carnival cries lines is my last choice. In fact, I've opted not to go on a cruise for my honeymoon because I can't find one other than Carnival. Let me elaborate, if you have never cruised before, you'll have a great time. There is something to be said for foreign carriers...they fulfill every need. Carnival employs American workers who are looking for tips. Either way, if you decide to take a cruise, do our research. Find locals who offer excursions that would be so much less than booking through the ship. Cruising is fun! It's a floating hotel with everything in one place plus you'll get to see lots of other things. Wish you well.
  • Yeah, I agree with PP. I did a Princess cruise, and then a few years later I did Carnival and I was severely disappointed. It was like going from a Macy's to a KMart.
  • I have to agree with Blad and CWaggoner at this point.  I've only ever cruised Carnival and we're using it for our honeymoon for the budget reason, but I love it.  Yes that may change when we eventually go on a different cruise line, but for right now Carnival works.

The excursions through the ship are a lot more expensive than the ones you can find yourself on the island/port.  Just saying.

We did a Carnival cruise for our HM last month.  It's definitely a step down from Royal Caribbean, but we had fun regardless.  I recommend eating at a specialty restaurant at least once - the food is so much better than the main dining room.  We ate at the steak house on our cruise 2 nights.  It did cost $35 per person, but we got so much food and it was absolutely delicious.

We didn't stop in Jamaica, but we did stop in Cozumel and Grand Cayman.  In Cozumel, we did the Carnival sponsored trip to the Tulum ruins and we LOVED it.  In Grand Cayman, we took a cab to Royal Palms on Seven Mile Beach.  It was beautiful and the bar on site served great food and drinks.

ETA: Just wanted to explain what I mean when I say Carnival is a step down from Royal Caribbean.  I've cruised with Royal Caribbean as well as Celebrity and I did not have one complaint about either cruise line.  Food was excellent, service was top notch, no issues at all.  Out cruise with Carnival was great - just not AS great as with the other cruise lines.  The food was very good, but not excellent (H and I thought Carnival's steak house food was comparable to the main dining room food on other cruise lines).  The service was very good, but not worth tipping any extra cash (In the main dining room, we sat at a table for 4 and every night, our waiter did not serve all of our dishes at once.  I would get my entree and 10 minutes later, H would get his.)  That being said, the pricing for Carnival is unbeatable.  We paid less and got what we paid for.  We weren't expecting it to be a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity.  We were very happy with our cruise and we would definitely cruise with Carnival again.

  • Check out CruiseCritic.com for reviews on the ship specifically.

As for Carnival Cruises, I think you will be fine if you are not super picky or expect the world. Carnival is the most affordable cruise line and that is reflected in the price. But you will still get good food and service and have a great time!

  • We went on a Carnival cruise for our HM and loved it. It's not the most luxurious cruise line but honestly it's what you make out of it.

  • ive been on princess, cunard, carnival and disney. i thought that carnival's service was some of the best. i thought that princess had the worst service. carnival hires people from all over the world-just like princess-same company owns them.

as for the cruise itself-i am FAR more concerned about the ports than the ship or the cruiseline. i'm not a fan of cruiseship entertainment anyway so that doesn't matter. staterooms, service, food and ports are most important to me. i've foudn that i enjoyed both of my carnival cruises immensely (one week long caribbean and one 12 night mediterranean) and didn't have many bad things to say about either.  i can't say the same about princess-their service, especially in the dining room was slow and awful-and we haad 2 tables of people in our group so it wasn't just my opinion. 30 minutes for a glass of wine? no.  to me carnival has 2 steps up on princess in that regard. others may disagree but that was what i found.

in the end it really is what you make of it.

  • Some people love Carnival.  I'm not one of them.

I'm also not a fan of the western caribbean but don't go by me.  What do you like?

Your best bet really is www.cruisecritic.com. It is to cruising what the knot is to weddings.

<div>I have been on the conquest and went to those ports on it [this was about 10 years ago].  I think I was on the Conquest before it was remodeled though, so I can't give too much info on the ship.  It was a lot smaller than some of the newer ones, but not bad by any means.  (I am one of those people that doesn't notice a big difference between Carnival, Princess and RC...I like RC and Carnival equally and Princess slightly less out of the 7 or so cruises I've done).  </div><div>
</div><div>In Jamaica, we did the Dunn's River falls "climbing the waterfalls" which I found slightly disappointing.  The scenery was beautiful, but the excursion was very cheesy and cruise-like.  It was one of those things with hundreds of people altogether, holding hands forming a chain and walking up the falls.  </div><div>
</div><div>In Cozumel, I went scuba diving (just beginner scuba, I'm not certified), and it was beautiful.  The water was great and so clear.  They took us to a "ship wreck" which I'm sure is staged, but we still got to see some pretty neat fish. </div><div>
</div><div>In Grand Cayman, we did the turtle farm and stingray feeding.  The stingray thing is also cruise-like cheesy, but I actually thought it was really awesome since the rays are huge and are brushing up against you and coming right up to you.  </div><div>
