Negotiating venue minimums

The venues we're looking at right now have minimums that are a bit higher than the number of guests we're expecting (we expect around 270 and the Princeton Westin & Hyatt require 300). Has anyone negotiated down minimums in other venues? Any tips for doing so (for example, offering to hold & pay for an additional event like a brunch the next day). Any advice or tips would be much appreciated!

Re: Negotiating venue minimums

  • Some places I spoke with were willing to slide the minimum by 10 guests or so. Others were not willing to budge at all. I guess it depends on the place so it can't hurt to ask.

It seems if you try to book the venue 4-5 months before your event, there will be more negotiating power on your end. This was the case when I spoke with one venue (Valley Regency) and noticed that they were hosting a wedding for 105 people when their minimum was 150. I asked about this and they said that it was because they booked the place 4-5 months ago.

I'm trying to negotiate as well and it is not going so well.. :(

    Good luck!
  • We negotiated the minimum down by moving our wedding date to off season.
  • I started looking at venues way in advance to see what costs were going to be like for us so we could decide what kind of wedding we can have. One venue knocked it down 50 people for the minimum and said he may be able to work with us a little more if we still cant meet it and he also worked with the price quite a bit so it was more in our budget. I emailed another place and told we weren't going to be able to use them because we couldn't meet the minimum and it was way out of our price range. They asked what we were looking for never even answered me back when i sent them our s. Every place is going to be different... you've just got to ask! Many will work with you especially during off season.
