Maui Wedding opinions..................

Hello Everyone, my Name is Mindy and I will be getting married in Maui in May of 2012.  Def nervous about the selections I make.  I have an idea of who I may use for my WC.  Was wondering if anyone has used Tim Clark with Hawaiian Island weddings?  He seems to know what he is doing, just wanted to find if anyone used him before.  He is suggesting to stay at the Waliea Marriot, and have our wedding ceremony at Makena Oceanfront Lawn.  I then wanted to have Luau for my reception in which he suggested to have at the Marriot.  If anyone has any reviews or suggestions at all, please let me know.  Thanks

    Hi Mindy, welcome and congrats!  I haven't heard of Tim but his advice sounds solid so far.  The Wailea Marriott is a nice hotel -- not over the top & expensive like others in Wailea.  IMO it's the nicest reasonably priced hotel ($200ish a night) and the staff there is very accommodating for weddings.  We held the rehearsal dinner, welcome cocktails, and Sunday brunch on site, too, and it was very convenient for everyone. 

    I'm not familiar with the Makena Oceanfront Lawn, though.  Is it on the Marriott property?

    I also have not been to the Marriott Luau, but DH and I sent our families two nights before the wedding.  They said it was really great, and it seemed that everyone had a good time.  I am not sure how it compares to the Old Lahaina Luau (which is supposedly the best on island) but I believe the Marriott still has a fire dancer, and OLL does not.

    Other gals may have some better advice...

    We are actually planning on either doing the Marriott's Luau or the Grand Wailea Luau instead of OLL for proximity reasons. We want everyone in our party to be able to come and OLL is about 40 minutes from our hotels, we also want everyone to get home safely and be able to enjoy themselves and have a cocktail or two (or more) at the luau.

    Like Tanq said, his advice sounds solid but I haven't heard of him before.

    Don't let that sway you though. If he's been helpful and you feel comfortable with him, go with him! I am using Bill from Mauidforever.com He has a lot of positive reviews on weddingwire and a couple on weddingchannel.com but no one over here had used him before. He's incredibly helpful and I'm extremely happy with my choice so far.

    Welcome to the board, Mindy!!  And congrats on choosing Maui, you made the right choice!  :)  

    As Tanq said, Wailea Marriott is a nice hotel...don't know much about it, but a few of our guests went there and said the property was beautiful.  You can't go wrong with Wailea in general though.  :)

    FYI, the Honua'ula Luau that used to be at the Marriott is now at the Grand Wailea (same show and performers as before), which is right next door.   We went there for our rehearsal dinner and it was AWESOME!!  Rave reviews from our guests and one of the highlights of the entire trip...the food and drinks were excellent too.  (EDIT:  Marriott may have replaced the show with another one, not sure...probably a smaller production though)

    I've never heard of Tim Clark before, but there are tonnes of coordinators on Maui.  Just make sure you interview him and ask questions...not just over e-mail, but over the phone too.  Maybe ask him for his portfolio of weddings and whether he's ever planned a wedding at the Marriott before...site familiarity was a "must" for us!

    Brea - haha, I added an edit to my post the same time as yours!  :)  

    The luau that used to be at the Marriott (called Honua'ula Luau) moved to Grand Wailea a couple months ago.  This is the luau with a champion fire knife dancer (who's awesome btw!).  All the performers and the entire act moved to Grand Wailea for a larger stage and production (or that's what I was told at the time).

    However, the Marriott might have replaced it with their own show.  I'm not sure...  If I were to pick between the two, I'd pick the Grand's luau (Honua'ula), because it's more established (even with the recent move).  Plus, I'm biased because that's the one we went to!  ;-)  There's lots of reviews on-line too.  HTH!  :)
