Gift idea for parents

I know a lot of knotties post about gift ideas for their bridal party or parents...and I am stumped too! I have no idea what to get them. Both my parents and FIs parents have helped quite a bit with our wedding, and we want to thank them with something nice. I thought about doing a gift card for an overnight stay at a nice spa/resort...but we are already having our wedding at a nice spa/resort and we will be there all weekend...so it seems weird to give them another weekend getaway as their gift. Both sets of parents are into gardening and maintaining a nice lawn....I thought about buying them each a nice flowering bush (like an Azalea or Rhododendron or something pretty...) Thoughts? I want to get them something that will last, as sort of a keepsake. Is it wierd to get them shrubbery? haha

Re: Gift idea for parents

  • I think that's a really nice idea and personal to both sets of parents since they enjoy gardening.  We ended up waiting and buying the parent albums.
  • I love the idea of a flowering bush or small tree.  Especially if they are into gardening.  I think they will appreciate it and it is something they will have forever.  We are making a hard covered book of our engagement pictures to give to our parents for a keepsake.
  • I think it's a good idea. Not great with plant names, but something that is more flowery and ornamental would be nice

  • I think we're going to do it! I thought about getting a tree (my parents lost their dogwood tree in that storm back in October, and they were devastated!) but I think a tree will be a lot of work to put in the ground, and I don't want to get them a gift that requires a lot of work. So I think we will go with a nice shrub. Seems like it will be easy enough to plant. I was researching prices and it turns out they are less expensive than I thought, so I think we might even be able to get them something else, like a parents' photo album :)

    I love that idea!

We're getting our parents a gift card to their favorite restaurant and we're getting our moms a 'wedding- themed' charm for their Pandora bracelets.  They'll also get parent albums after the wedding.

  • I think that is a pretty awesome and unique idea! I don't think that the size trees that they sell will be any more difficult/easy to plant than the shrubs you mentioned earlier. I went to Lowes this past weekend and they were similar in prices too. If your parents loved the dogwood they lost, you should replace it. I bet it would mean the world to them!

Agreed! We planted a maple tree ourselves (well, FI dug the hole haha... I helped pick it out) a year or so ago, and it wasn't very expensive or hard to plant/maintain at all. Just need a good shovel to dig a decent sized hole, and some rope/stakes to make sure it grows nice and straight--wouldn't take more than a half hour or so. Not sure how big a "young" dogwood would be, but I can't imagine it being very big. I personally like the tree idea more, because it seems like it would be really symbolic & meaningful in your situation. But whichever you choose, the whole plant idea is really nice :)

Good to know! I'm not very good at gardening, at all! (My mother is an amazing gardener, but unfortuntely I didn't inherit that gene)...so I guess I was under the impression that it would be a huge project to plant a tree. But you have a point....when you plant a tree, it's usually a young tree, so it's not going to be very large or awkward. I think we might go with the tree..assuming we can find the right one. As for FI's parents...he is still on the fence about it. He thinks his parents would certainly like a tree, but they might like something else better. So we might end up doing the tree for my parents, and something else for FI's. Thank you for the tips ladies!
