How soon

I'm not sure if this was answered yet.  Sorry if it has, I'll look for the thread more closely.  I just want to know how soon do people usually register?  I want to have everything set, but I'm nervous that since the wedding isn't for another 13 months it will be too soon.  We have pushed the date back about 8 months so I had started registries when we were planning on getting married this fall.

Re: How soon

  • We registered on the early side, which was 6 months before.  This just means I have to tweak it every once in awhile for items that have been discontinued, etc.

Do you know if there will be any showers thrown for you - if so I would think you would want your registry completed before those invitations went out.   But it's really up to you and what you want to do - just know that the earlier you do it the more likely something could be discontinued by the store.

We started registering before our engagement party, a year before the wedding.  The only things that are no longer carried at any of the stores were discontinued by the manufacturers. It took us a long time to fully register though, we read a lot of reviews, made multiple trips to the stores because our work schedules made it difficult to be able to go to the store together for long enough to complete our registry at each.  I would research which store to register at if they have several locations in your area, customer service can vary widely.
  • It depends on your family and friends. I registered super early, like over a year out, because my family wanted to buy me stuff. My Great Aunt where we were registered the day ftr we got engaged! And it was Christmas! I did check it often though to make sure things weren't discontinued. That only happened once though and it was only like a week ago.

We registered about 8 months out, which was well more than enough time. in mots families engagement parties, if they have them, aren't big gift-giving occasions so you really don't need to make one until a month or so before your shower.

  • Thanks for the tips!  I guess I'm just nervous because I dont want anyting to be discontinued and I feel like after the holidays this year I'll have to go on my registry and start all over.

  • I think it also depends where you are registering. FI and I are a year out right now, and we plan on registering in October or November, that way our family can get stuff of it for us for Christmas. I talked to a lady at BBB and she said that pretty much most of their kitchen stuff never goes discontinued, unless it is holiday or seasonally specific items. She said the stuff you have to watch for being discontinued is the bedding, towels, etc. So we are going to start with the stuff that most likely will not go discontinued and add the other stuff closer to the shower.

  • II guess it depends were you live and your family and friends with gifts and things, but we registered shortly after becoming engaged. People asked and even though we aren't getting married till next november we had our engagement party and people bought us gifts off the registry for that. It also helps people buy things on sale and have time to look around if they want to get a great deal on things you registered for. Our families have a big thing about formal dinnerware, lenox actually and people have bought things at the outlet told our parents and they have taken them off the registry for us. My advice, just go register its fun and its one less thing to do later.
  • We registered 4 months out, which was about a month and a half before our first shower.

We registered 13-14 months out and haven't had a problem.  I knew we were getting engaged though, so I started looking at what sorts of things don't go out of stock.  The only thing we've had go out of stock are kitchen towels at WS, but that's because it's a popular color that gets sold out and brought back over and over.  It's unlikely your entire list is going to be gone at any given time - and I sort of like browsing through new selections when something is of a limited quantity.

  • You can register anywhere between as soon as you get engaged to right before your invitations go out. "Invitations" means the earlier of your bridal shower invitations or, if you're not having a shower, your wedding invitations.

We got "Where are you registered?" questions as soon as we got engaged, so we set up one registry super-early, then another around when theknot's timeline told us to. Don't know when that was, exactly.
