Looking at venues...

So the FI and I have reached the point where we're ready to start looking at venues. Problem is... Where do we even begin?!

I have a feeling step one is emailing/calling the coordinator at the venue to set up an appointment, but should I also ask basic questions? For example, a general idea of cost/availability on our date/etc. Are there any other questions I should ask?

Do you have any advice about what I should look for and ask when we do the actual walkthrough? I'm just paranoid that I'm going to look like an idiot and I'm not going to ask important questions that I really need to ask!!

Also, should I interview wedding coordinators BEFORE I start looking at venues? I know the venues I've been looking at have DOCs, but I haven't seen anything about "full-service" coordinators...

Any and all advice is welcome!!
Thank you so much!

  • If you search the message boards for "venue questions to ask" or something like that a lot of past threads cover this and are helpful. I would def like post on Facebook and ask friends for ideas (since they are likely to know venues in your area and probably have attended weddings in the area). Not sure what to say about the wedding coordinator since Im not using one.... I would imagine book that first and he or she can help you find a venue. Also, just read through all TK boards to see what other brides have done. I love searching the boards- I learn a lot that way! good luck!

  • Here's the thing....I don't know when you are planning your wedding but we started looking January 2nd for venues in Wichita for a late September or early October wedding and we started with our top 5, then the next top 5, then the next top 5, and now we are on our bottom 5 which makes this exciting time in our life seem depressing. Basically what I'm saying is 10 months advanced search is not early enough around here. But that aside, here's every place we've checked out (and we've literally checked out EVERYTHING):
    Abode Venue
    Botanica
    Scottish Rite
    Indian Center
    Riverside Central Park- Gazebo
    Aley Park Community Facility
    Garvey Center
    20th Century Center
    Museum of World Treasures
    Exploration Place
    Crown Uptown
    Center for the Arts
    The Boulevard
    The Spectrum
    Hyatt
    Marriott
    Airport Hilton
    Ramada
    Eberly Farms
    Hotel at Old Town
    Drury (Broadview) Hotel
    Prairy Pines
    EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY CLUB!
    Wyldewood Cellars
    Red Barn
    WIchita Boathouse
    The Castle Inn Riverside
    Grand Chapel
    Cowtown
    Cotillion
    Orpheum
    Nativity Pines
    Tanganyika Wildlife park
    Sedgwick Co. Zoo
    Avaition Museum
    The Inn at River Road
    Dyke Airboretum in Hesston
    Red Rooster in El Dorado

....I think that's it! At least those are the ones I still had bookmarked in my "wedding venue" file. GOOD LUCK!
