Wedding "themes" ??

Do any of you have a "theme" for you wedding??  I've heard of people having a Vegas theme or old fashion theme or nautical theme.

Our wedding is in a sort of tourist destination town (Galena, IL) so I was thinking of playing with a "Weekend Getaway" theme. Like making the invites look like tri-fold vacation brochures and suggesting people do some tourist-y things during the day, before our evening wedding.  What other things could I incorporate to work in this theme??

Re: Wedding "themes" ??

  • When I think of "weekend getaway", I think of travel. Have you googled travel-themed wedding favors? I especially love the little suitcases that hold goodies.

We are going for a woodland/forest theme. We live in the Ozark Mountains and when we think of times we are the most peaceful, it's in the middle of the woods soaking up that particular atmosphere.

  • We are doing a vintage candy shop theme. I got my inspiration from here:  http://www.weddingchicks.com/2012/08/06/diy-purple-wedding-inspiration/

I searched for this town on google, and saw that there is a lot of historical charm, and vintage boutiques on main street. That would be really fun if you like vintage themes. Otherewise, I agree with PP, I think of travel, and a very small, cozy bed and breakfast.

Sorry I was of no help : (

Mine is very rustic since the reception itself is in a barn. My fiancé and I are quite country so we will be showing our colors that day since only some of our family and friends are also into the country lifestyle. We have some vintage touches but it's mostly because it looks rustic (I am using antique hardware to dress up my table numbers but because it looks all weathered, and milk glass vases are simple and inexpensive at thrift and antique shops). I think you can tie in the best of both worlds and have a travel wedding but use a lot of vintage decor. You can do the vintage suitcase card holder and when I go searching for goodies at antique shops very often I find vintage post cards to be inexpensive which could be fun for you to incorporate (table numbers, escort cards or whatever you can think of). If you're doing the brochure invitation you can still style it with a vintage look. Again, this is all if you want to add in the vintage touch the previous poster mentioned, just saying it can be tastefully done and quite unique

  • I was really drawn to the "vintage travel" theme originally, too- it sounds like if that is your and FI's style that it could work really well!

Love the little airplanes and things in this one:

Love the colors of this one:

I pinned a bunch more, but think I deleted a lot of them since FI wasn't in to the vintage idea.  We are doing sort of a classic look, but with a slight travel theme- maybe a nice trunk or suitcase card box, travel-themed cake topper that is still somewhat classic (it's called "A Kiss and We're Off"), doing our table names as the airports that we've traveled through to see each other or traveled to together, a few small touches like that :-)

  • We're doing a sort of eclectic elegance. It's going to be pretty quirky and fun, like us, but still be sort of fancy. It's a ballroom reception, so we want it to fell like a fancy wedding but be more fun. There will be a lot of components that nod to our relationship, like tables named after our road trip hot spots and baseball wedding cake topper.

  • I don't think we are sticking with any particular theme. We've chosen our colors so far, but haven't started thinking about the details. I know we'll try to incorporate something to make it feel more special, but I have no idea what yet.

Great ideas!! I've actually already started collecting my milk glass vases!! So you were right on the money there... and I LOVE the idea of finding vintage postcards to include in the centerpieces!! I know a shop in downtown Galena has a bunch of those!! Thanks!
  • If you are going to do a travel theme I like the suitecase idea for the card box. Instead of numbering the tables make them you and your fi's  favorite spots.

We are doing a casino theme. My FI loves to play poker and I am a bit of a slots fan when I i go! Our stuff is tentative bc we aren't 100% sure but for centerpieces we are going to have vases that on the bottome will be blue poker chips  and dice with a floating candle on top. For escort cards we are thinking about stacking up pocker chips and gluing them and putting a slit in the top and the card on that. But other then that we are sure what to do or what will work!

  • I just got a super neat idea!!  What if instead of numbering tables I name each one after one of the Bed & Breakfasts in Galena!?!? (there are 29!!!) That would fit into the weekend getaway theme!  What do you think?? would that be fun??

I think that's a wonderful idea! Well, as long as the names are similar. Otherwise it might get confusing.

  • I like to call mine a "jazzed up & chic" nautical theme. Instead of red and navy blue, our colors are fuchsia and navy blue. I want it to pop with color but also have that laid back, beachy feeling. I want it more cute than fancy. :)

I was just in this shop the other day and they had town name post cards as the table "numbers". I thought this was such a cute idea! Something you may want to think about.
