Re: When Dad Goes to Jail....

  • The review of the book seems fake to me.

In theory this could be a good idea for children who are struggling, but if the review has some validity and it portrays jail as a happy place, then this book is just a mistake.

  • What the holy hell?

    And what is this?

Where are the stained bunk beds? The blazing fluorescent lights? Where's the creepy bunny with the missing ear carving a swastika on the wall with a plastic spoon? Where's the toilet sangria? Where's the bunny snitch that gets shanked by a member of the Aryan Brotherhood?

I was equal parts horrified and cracking up reading the review. I assume it's fake but it still made me giggle inappropriately.

I actually agree that in theory the book may be a good idea but I still don't know. It just seems too... weird.

    no. really?
  • As someone who has had to take care of children when family members go off to jail, I think less information is warranted.

They already know something is wrong, they really dont need ALL the details. When I had to take the diaper off my son to go in the prison to visit my brother, it was the last time I visited. I like to keep my kid innocent as long as I can.

first off- I hope my posting this didn't seem insensitive! I just realized it could.

However- I think your comment about keeping kids innocent is what shocked me SO much when I saw someone post a link to the book.I just cannot imagine handing this to a kid and using it as a tool to explain things to them. It's ridiculous.

You could never offend me love!

I had had enough of my siblings shenanigans, and wasn't about to subject my son to it. You want to see your nephew, get out and get clean.

I watched my nieces go through hell when my sister was in more than once, and my mom and I trying to raise them to the best of our abilities.

Kids don't need to know this crap. They already know what the hell is going on, they are not stupid.

  • Um if I remember correctly Mr. MacGregor's garden was not fun and games. I mean yeah, food everywhere, but Mr. MacGregor would fcuk you up if he found you eating his cabbages.

For real though - these links kinda make me sad.

True! That was more a cautionary tale of "Don't trespass and eat shiiit that isn't yours" than a fluffy bunny children's tale. Evil Mr. MacGregor and his bunny pies.

My uncle was in jail when I was a kid. Granted, it didn't affect me the way my father being in jail would, but we got the concept of "Uncle J did something wrong and he'll be out in a year" without storybooks. I'm pretty sure my cousins (his daughters) did too.

  • I was looking at the preview of the book and it seems to address quite a bit, including visiting both prisons and jail and number of parents in jail. It does seem like it would be an abundance of information for a small child to try and take in. On the back cover it also says there is a book called Goodbye, Jeepers in this colletion. I looked that book up and there are several raving reviews on how helpful the book can be. Maybe this one will end up being the same?

That review is clearly not real. And to second PP, there is just way too much information. Children whose parents are incarcerated don't need all the details, they just need to be comforted IMO. I use "Visiting Day" instead.

ETA: It's by Jacqueline Woodson, in case anyone's interested.

I actually have seen and read the book (it was sold to the used bookstore I work at and I was curious). It actually isn't bad. It's not so much about what happens to the person who goes to jail as it is about what happens to the child when the parent goes to jail. They talk about visiting the jail, where the child can live, the fact that dad is being punished, and how to deal with bullies at school. It was actually quite informative, but was a lot for a child to take in. From whatI saw, though, it was about comforting the child.

  • It's a social story. They're used to help kids (especially kids with Autism spectrum disorders) understand situations that are, well, difficult for them to understand. It will probably explain things like how they won't get to see dad for awhie but it's not their fault, what it will be like if they go visit, etc.

Yes, there are definitely times when less information is better, but sometimes the info needs to be given, and this is actually a really good (read: supported by lots and lots of research) way to give the info in an age appropriate, easier to understand way. Again, definitely not fitting for all situations, but surely will be useful for some.
