Free (even state) e-file!

I didn't know about this, because turbo tax doesn't promote it, but I was looking at how to paper file H's state return (because we're MFJ for federal and MFS for state), and the GA Dep't of Revenue told me about it. There are a whole bunch of states that let you file free state returns (so you don't even pay the usual TT $29.95 prep fee) if you're military. Even if you live in one of the states that doesn't do that, it's a cheaper prep fee of $14.95. The one caveat is that if you already have a TT account, you have to make a new one, because even if you go through the freedom site, they will charge you because they're a bit wankery. So you have to make a new account with a different email. Not a huge deal, but just to warn you so you don't get all the way to the end and have to start over. ETA: I'll still have to pay the state fee of $29.95 since we're MFS for state, but it was really nice to get it for free for H's state return!

I know a lot of you might not be the ones who do the SM's taxes since you might not be married or whatever, but I love filing tax returns and did so for H when we were just dating.

I don't know why it's highlighted funny. I guess because I C&P'd from my post on MN.

Re: Free (even state) e-file!

  • I need to figure out what accountant to go to for mine. FI is probably gonna go to the base if you can even call it that it's so small for his
  • I'm surprised either of you need help. Single taxes are so easy to file.

  • Stan, did you file.your H's tax yet? H&R Block does it for free. This is through Military OneSource. H has always filed this way and he just filed earlier tonight!

Download the 1040EZ from irs.gov Zim. I imagine you'd take the standard deduction. Super easy.

Well my 1099 is from Arbonne and technically I own my business so mileage, postage, printing services, all that stuff I save the receipts and it's all tax deductible
  • Yeah, that's a bit more complicated, Zim.  I understand.

Mine's a bit complicated this year because I was unemployed for so long, and can claim all job hunting actions as deductions.  FI's Mom owns her own accounting practice, so she just does them for us.

This is the last year we file separately, which is kind of cool.  Though I think we'll do "Married Filing Separately" if it helps with his Income Based Repayment program for his loans.  So damned complicated.... FI got frustrated when he found out my income from this whole year would count towards household income on our next tax return, even though we're gettng married in the 4th fiscal quarter, so he suggested that we do a reverse PPD - have the big party as planned but not actually sign the marriage license until January 2013.  I flipped a wig and told him he was either marrying me on our wedding day or he isn't marrying me at all.

Stupid boy.  Love him, and I know he's just being logical, but I was so hurt/angry.

  • Does anyone know how I can get my school loan company to send me the info for my deductions? Or when I can expect it? Because they have yet to do so, and I'd really like to file my taxes so I can get my money back!

<div>I haven't gotten mine yet either, or my W2 from work, so I think it's still early in some cases. I can never find the paper statement that they send me, so I usually log on electronically and check  my statement.  Yours may be similar.</div>
  • Just out of curiosity...since FI and I will be married by the fall semester, will we qualify for more financial aid since we're no longer dependents of our parents? Or no because when my parents file our FAFSAs I'll still be a dependent?

This is a question for an accountant, but my understanding is once you're married, your parents can no longer claim you as a dependent.  It's an annual thing - whether you get married Jan 1st or Dec 31st, it all counts the same.  So for this calendar year, you will be a dependent of your parents because it's based on last year's taxes (the ones being filed now).  Next year, your parents can't claim you as a dependent since you will have gotten married tis year.

<div>I filed his state tax refund. I am going to check out MOS/HRB for my state taxes and then run both for our MFJ federal and see what's better. I loathe HRB, but I like free.</div>

  • Oh great topic! I am going to file my taxes online for the first time this year. I only claim myself and I have the same job and I'm not claiming anything. I didn't want to pay $75 for my tax guy to do this because frankly, I need that money!

I tried reading the above posts but my brain is tired and I don't understand it. Anyone have any recommendations?
