Getting in Shape

What are you doing to get in shape?

Before the holidays I was going to the gym 3-4 days a week.  When the holidays hit I literally had no time for the gym anymore. There were family get togethers, birthdays, my cousin danced in the Nutcracker Ballet etc.

So now that the holidays are over I'm SOOO ready to get back into a workout routine.  My gym is doing a RIPT program again (which stands for Resistance, Interval, Plyometrics Training).  They also added some new classes at 5:30, which I'm so excited for because my gym is on my way home and I work until 5:00.  I'm so glad to have more options for classes and be able to mix things up.  So on top of my RIPT which is 3 days a week, I plan to alternate a Bootcamp class, Kickboxing class and Strictly Strength class on Tues and Thurs.

My goal for the next 10 weeks (until the end of RIPT which is March 22) is hit the gym 4-5 days per week.  By that time spring will be here and I can break out my bike and bike to work everyday (I live only about 3 miles from my job).

What is everyone else planning on doing this new year?

Re: What are you doing to get in shape?

  • I seriously need to reset after the holidays-I feel like a bloated baloon!  I'm starting to eat Paleo (some other posts recommended some good blogs in my post a little further down the page), am continuing to go to CrossFit (aiming for 5 days a week), and starting to train for a marathon.  I think for me, the marathon training is going to be the toughest because I dislike running in the cold, and getting longer runs in during the week after CrossFit (I run 1.75 miles each way to my CF gym) is usually the last thing I want to to.

I know that reaching my fitness goals for this year will be hard work, but I'm really lucky that FI attends CF with me and is also training for the same marathon (his first!)  I ran a 4 miler on NYE, and even though I ran a decent pace, it really motivated me to train harder and be faster so I can be more competitive.
  • I plan to continue attending Body Combat 1-2 times per week, Body Pump every Saturday and then supplementing with 1-2 more weightlifting sessions every week, and filling in the holes with cardio equipment. This is going to be my plan until it warms up outside, then I would like to start the Couch to 5K program and maybe participate in a 5K in the fall.

I like the idea of the monthly challenges that we started last month as well. I think it will really help if I challenge myself in a different area every month.

  • My FI hired me a personal trainer for Christmas. 8 sessions to start. We do kickboxing/boxing classes together (LA Boxing) but that's mostly all cardio so I need weight lifting to tone. I want strong toned arms again. Hopefully the 8 sessions will be enough to get me in the rhythm of training on my own.

Every January, for the entire month, I cleanse. I eliminate alcohol, red meat, fried foods, sugar, and dairy (for 2012, one of my resolutions was to cut back signifigantly on dairy--I rarely indulge). I've gone completely vegan before and I've also done a liquid cleanse--both were awful and made me so cranky. It's a great way to boost my energy and prepare me for the year.

So, I'll go from there. One day at a time :-)
