Not really new, per say. But I have commented a couple of times on here when I've really needed something. I'm more a lurker than a poster, but for some reason, I've felt the urge to post more lately. Part of the reason I took a back-seat on the boards is because my username thingie is my actual name, but that's because I signed up as a journalist a couple of years ago. Needed something professional.  But I'm not really nervous about you all finding out stuff about me. Everything that's out there about me on the Internet isn't all that scary.

Nothing like starting my introductory post on a tangent. Anyway, I'm getting married Aug. 13 at Turning Stone. I'm from the Ithaca area, though. I wanted a winery wedding and decided against it after realizing the costs ... and the lack of hotels. Turning Stone fit for me because people can stay right there. It's a ballroom with ugly carpet, but I'll deal.

Ceremony will be outside -- but I have no idea who is performing it. Anyone know any officiants that won't use the word Jesus? You see, I'm Jewish and my fiance, Chris, isn't. Yet, we're getting married on an Indian Reservation and need an ordained minister. Justice of the Peace don't have jurisdiction over the reservation. Weird, right?

So besides the officiant, I still need a florist and a hair stylist. I'm living four hours away, so it hasn't been all that easy to plan these things. I'll have to make a trip back to CNY soon to hammer out the last of the big things, cause ya I know, it's less than five months away. Don't remind me.

The spa at Turning Stone does great work (hair).  I had a friend get married there last summer and she got pampered all morning.... hair, nails, makeup, the works!  She looked amazing and didn't have to worry about running all over creation (like I do... jealous) to get everything done.  HTH

    Welcome Sarah!

Hmmm...that's a tough situation for the officiant. You could try googling Unitarian Universalist church.  This church is like a combination of many faiths, and you might have luck finding an officiant that won't say 'Jesus'. Smile I'd check it out and see if that's something. There's a church in Utica, not sure about Syracuse.

The Turning Stone also has people who do flowers, though I'm not sure of the price and if that would be in addition to their packages or with their packages. I'm using a florist out of Rome-Olney's flowers, you could also try Julie Young (Floribunda Designs) out of Oneida. Not sure what your budget is, but just two recommendations.

Hello, Sarah!  That's my name too!

I don't know much about that area, but maybe Syracuse U or another nearby college has a religion center where you can find an officiant who's really used to working with people of different faiths?  I originally looked at the Cornell United Religious Work program to find an officiant (didn't end up going with someone from there, but they have a good list).  You could check there as well, but I was just thinking that Syracuse would be a lot closer.

Good luck with your planning!  Looking forward to reading more of your comments and posts.  :-)

Thanks, all. So helpful! I'll definitely follow up on all these tips. In the past, I just googled the heck out of things thinking that would be the solution to all my questions.

But it turns out you all are much more knowledgeable than Google.

I've been trying to reach the manager at the spa at Turning Stone, cause I'm gonna just splurge on that convenience. And as far as flowers, that florist looked uber-expensive, so I'm going to get some quotes at some smaller places... I'll check out the Rome and Utica florists!

And officiant, SU is a great idea. And also love the Universalist Church's philosophy, didn't think about them.

Hi Sarah! Welcome to the boards, I wish I had some advice for you but i'm in the same boat you are with the officiant and florist, etc. From what I've read everyone on here is so helpful so we're sure to get some great advice :)

I'm not sure if I'm new or not either, I don't really post that much except when i'm really excited about checking things off my list! But I'll introduce myself anyway. My name is Catrina and I live just north of Utica, and I'm getting married in Utica on October 8th of this year. I have most of the big planning done, but I also don't have an officiant. My FI is Catholic and I'm not so we're looking for more of a non-denominational ceremony but I don't even know where to start looking. I don't care if I have a JP or a revered, or whatever, I just need someone to marry me! LOL.
Also, not sure what you all are doing for cake, but I'm thinking of going with cupcakes and wondering if you guys have any recommendations for cakes or cupcakes? I'm on a very small budget!
I'm trying to participate more on the boards also as I'm just over six months away and feel like I still have a lot to hash out.
    TIA! :)

Hi everyone!  I usully write on my wedding month board, but have recently become interested in this one.  I'm getting married on October 15, 2011.  The ceremony is at Masonic Home...for those of you who were worried about non-denominational locations it might be an option for you.  We are having the reception at the Beeches.  I think someone else is also using my florist...Onley's out of Rome!  Well nice to meet everyone.   Baker is going to be Desserts beyond the ordinary out of Utica.  Hmmm, can't think of anything else at this moment!

Feel free to ask me anything! :) When picking venues and that stuff, I wanted to stay with as many local businesses as I could.  Is your wedding going to be outside at Masonic Home?  Where do you live? Just curious, there aren't too many 'East' CNY girls on this board.

No problem....ask away!  I llive in North Utica and yes Masonic is the ceremony site!  I was also trying to stay local...except my dress.  I had a very bad experience with a bridal shop around here so I went to Cortland for that.

I guess all my homework for school has me misreading everything lately :)  The ceremony will be inside the chapel on the Masonic grounds!

Nice. I live in New Hartford. I didn't even realize that Masonic Home had a chapel, that's really cool. I went to David's Bridal for my dress and for my bridesmaids, I wish we had a David's Bridal in Utica. Where are you going to school and what are you going for?
