Long stall in weight loss

So today I weighed myself and I am down 3lbs from two weeks ago. I am finally back to losing weight again. I lost 40lbs, but stayed the same for a few months, and now I'm back on track for losing. I'm hoping to lose about 20 more pounds, but I really am concerned about just being healthier!

Did anyone else have a long period with no changes, even with regular exercise?

Re: Long stall in weight loss

  • Yep. It's a plateau and extremely common.  I have one every 15lbs or so.  Usually, switching up diet can help get out of it.
  • Thank you! This is the first time I have stuck with a weight loss journey long enough to plateau, and I thought it would never end haha.

  • Omg yes. I hate plateaus! I have one about every 10 lbs, similar to what Anna said. When I start stalling I try and adjust my diet a little bit, eating a little more actually seems to help jump start the weight loss in. I also try to adjust my exercise routine. I usually try and do something new with cardio and/or up the weights I'm using.

  • I plateau all the time too.  Not so much in weightloss, because I'm happy with where I am and I eat to maintain my current weight not lose.  But in terms of performance... I'll have periods where my numbers on my lifts won't be going up, and it's SOOOOOOOO frustrating. So I completely get this.  Up until 2 months ago, I was on a 6 month plateau on my lifts.  I wanted to die!

What I've done in the past is try to get back to basics.  I look at my diet, and make sure I'm not sabotaging myself there, and normally I find I am.  For me I'm not eating enough, or I'm eating the wrong things seems to be the re-occurring theme.  When I eat more, I can lift more, but still maintain my weight by eating clean.

Then I look at my training. I will say this... and again I'm normally my own worst enemy here.  I get frustrated and start OVERTRAINING the same things over and over again because I've plateaued on those items.  Taking a break, like 3-5 days from the gym, and then going back with a fresh perspective and a new plan of attack always seems to work.  It seems sooooo counterintuitive, but I swear, the little bit of a break really does help!

  • Yeah I am in one now, so is FI.  So far about 2 months of it.  Maybe this is where my body wants to be, who knows.
