Getting in Shape

how to get started

i have no idea to really motivate myself to start getting fit
i got a bike and a weigt ball. to start toning up. {i dont need to
loose weight just need to tone up quite abit}
i work all afternoon tuesday-saturday at a very demanding job so
im very tired when i get home.
but my real question is does any one have a way to motivate yourself
to start working out?

Re: how to get started

  • For me, I have to do it first thing in the morning, otherwise it doesn't get done!

    Anniversary

  • Ditto MrsKathy - first thing in the morning, before I do anything else. And it helps to remind myself how awesome I'll feel after I work out!
  • You're the only one who can motivate yourself. Find something that inspires you and go with it - a lot of us are using our weddings as part of our motivation, but for me personally every time I workout I think about how I'm helping myself for the long run so that I can still walk when I'm 60 (I have a degenerative joint disease).

Me too. I know by the time I get out of work I will talk myself into not working out. So I go tot he gym every morning before work. No one can motivate you but you. If you want it enough, you will make the time.

  • 3 things: start small, make it fun, use music!

start small:  getting fit is a lifestyle change, not just a simple goal. this is something you'll want to make a habit for a long time.  so, start by adding in 5-10 minutes of activity a day wherever you can (can be 2 minutes at a time to add up to 10 minutes throughout the day). when that gets easy to fit in, add more!

make it FUN: what do you like to do for fun? play sports, walk at the mall, etc? USE THAT! don't think that activites have to be gym-related =)

use music:  I HATE jogging, but i find that i can go for much longer if i've got a good song playing. find upbeat songs that make you happy!

a few ways i get more activity in my day:
    -  do pushups, standing leg lifts, or run up and down the stairs a couple times when i'm waiting for something to heat up in the microwave (gives a good minute or so with a countdown and reward! haha)

    -  go for a 10 minute walk after dinner around the neighborhood with FI, a friend, a dog, etc

    - DANCE PARTY.  i tend to do this when i'm bored/unhappy about something. gets me out of my funk and gets me moving!  also happens when i'm cleaning/dusting/vaccuming

    - little movements while watching TV.  i stretch, do arm circles, crunches, etc during commercials.

    - park a little farther away. take stairs instead of elevators.

    - window shop at the mall (you'd be surprised how far you can walk while shopping!)
  • I am also just getting started. I have a crazy busy schedule, but have committed to myself to do 10-20 minutes a day Mon-Fri of toning exercises at home. Definitely not one that is out running miles every day, but it's a start and way better than nothing.

Find a time of day that works for you. I know I can't motivate myself to get up early, but FI works nightshift so when he leaves for work at 9:15PM, I get my workout in then.

  • I agree with gymbug - I am just starting out, but getting motivated was/is the hardest thing for me. It has taken me baby steps to get on track. I am NOT a morning person so getting to the gym first thing in the morning would never happen. I'm extremely tired after work so I wasn't motivated afterwards either.

What works for me is counting calories. I had no idea what I was eating before or what my limit should be. Once I started being accountable for what I was putting into my body it made me want to focus on the work that was coming out of my body. I had to change my mind before I could do anything physical. Part of my problem too was that I was eating such poor food choices, fast food every day... I was getting no energy from food. Since I've switched to healthier eating, veggies, fruits, lean meats, etc. I feel much more ready to work out and not exhausted.

Now I workout right before I go to bed. I do Insanity or various exercises I can do in my living room. I'll start jogging soon and adding more cardio as I continue to feel better. This is the first week I haven't felt like coming home and being a couch potato. Me not feeling sluggish anymore is motivation alone to keep up the good work.
