Should I change last name or just add on?

My last name already had two words, if I add it will be a little long? Advice?
Should I drop?

  • That's a personal preference that only you can answer.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

    That's totally up to you.

You should use the name you want to use and don't worry so much about the length.

I think the only thing I'll ask is, if you have kids, will they have your name, his name or both names? Because if both names are too long for you, will they be too long for them? And if they take their dad's name, will you be okay having a different last name as them and vice versa? I'm only honestly asking out of curiosity. I have no idea what child plans you have and it's none of my business, I'm only asking out of curiosity lol.

These are exactly the questions I asked myself when I considered adding on to my last name!  But I knew that having children was a part of our vision for the future.  I also asked myself, what if my children want to join THEIR last name with their future spouse?  Would I be taking away that option for them by making their original last name already a little long?  In the end, I decided to change my last name.  But as PPs all said, that was a very personal choice and every person and family is different.
  • I have a hyphenated last name also. I plan on adding my FI name to the end of my name. I know it will be long, (5 names total), but it'll be worth it. If we have kids, they'll have his last name, and we will all have the same last name (I will just have two extra in the middle). It's your choice, but know you are not alone!! You are already used to living a life with a hyphenated last name, what is one more name in the mix?

Plus having a hyphenated last name is amazing, it's like a story, first name, middle name,  father's last name, mother's last name, husbands name....not many people can say they carry their parents last names and their husbands last name all at once.
