Alcohol at the reception

we are having our reception at the Rio.  It's going to be more of just a dinner and cake, no dancing or anything (until we hit the clubs later).

I spoke to the guy at the restaurant and he said their drinks run 7.50-10 per cocktail, $6/beer, and wine bottle prices vary.  This may seem like a silly question, but should we be paying full menu price for drinks? There is going to be about 40 of us, and some are big drinkers, some are not.  Any advice would be appreciated :) thanks!

I am paying a per person/per hour for our reception. That may make it cheaper for you...
  • edited December 2011

Ask if you can pay per consumption as opposed to paying a flat fee per person. That way you are only paying for what people actually drink.  It may or may not work out to be cheaper, but it never hurts to ask.

I would think with 40 people they would be willing to work some kind of hosted bar for you. What restaurant is your reception and do you have a private room (area) booked?
For a group as large as yours, they should have some sort of hosted bar option other than consumption.

ETA: you know your group and how they drink. For us consumption would have been a ridiculous tab. We have drinkers that will make up (and then some) for the handful of nondrinkers and light drinkers. Hosted per person/per hour made more sense for our crowd

This was us too.  When we were originally planning, we had asked for the consumption price list from our venue and for us, the per person price was definitely the way to go.  With the way a lot of our guests drank, our bill would have been HUGE.

Our flat fee for premium booze for 5 hours is $47 per person.  That's 4 martinis at the Wynn.

    Score one for the smokester.

We're paying $38 for 4 hour open bar. Consumption would have been $8/drink. So as long as people average over 4.75 drinks during the reception, we're ahead, and I know a few of my friends will have had that many during the cocktail hour alone.

I love dirties.  My FI loves olives so we used to drink them all the time. I may need to have one when I get home.

BTW, we make ours with gin.

This thread reminded me that I had intended to ask the restaurant the day after our reception how many drinks they rang up for our party just out of curiosity; wanted to see if the open bar ended up worth it versus consumption.  I'm pretty sure we came out ahead, at the end of the night there were still about 40% of the guests there and they were really pounding the drinks.

Gin is the best.  In fact, I will have a G&T when I get home.
