cooking red meat..

So I must start this by saying that I LOVE red meat. Steak & burgers, definitely are hard for me turn down. I dont eat it frequently, probably every few weeks. For instance tonight i made a stir fry with a small amount of thinly sliced steak and lots of veggies. Is this an acceptable way to eat it? Or should it strictly be grilled. Opinions?

  • Um. I think you're fine eating that way. What exactly is your concern with non-grilled preparations?

I'm curious about this as well.

Sidenote:  Not that I'm worried but, hasn't there been some concern lately about the carcinogenic properties of grilled foods?

  • Simply the fact that nothing should be fried. And i feel like because its cooked in a frying pan its considered fried. I'm sure it sounds silly..

Ahh.  As long as you're using healthier oils and not deep fat frying everything, you're fine.

We do stir-fry with sesame oil or sunflower oil.
  • I didnt even use oil. :) i just threw the steak pieces in the pan and drained the juice and i marinated the veggies in balsamic vinegar then just poured the entire mixture into the pan.

That works too!  I'm watching my oils lately and trying to add beneficial ones.

Ah, OK. Really, there's nothing wrong with frying--or fat, for that matter. Here are a couple of sensible articles about why fat is good for you, why frying isn't evil, and how to add good fats (including butter, OMG) into your diet:

    <a href="http://findyourbalancehealth.com/2009/06/you-need-fat/" rel="nofollow">http://findyourbalancehealth.com/2009/06/you-need-fat/</a>

(The first one is slightly more "friendly" but both contain good information.)

    I'm skeptical of this.

The sun causes DNA damage/mutagenesis and cancer, too.

I'd have to research it to make an informed opinion, but my initial reaction is "Good grief."  Should I be proven wrong, I'll happily recant this statement.

That's my thought as well.  From the minimal research I've done (admittedly minimal) it seems to only be a "problem" in items with heavy char which I'm not a fan of anyway.
