New to the board - looking for advice

Hi Ladies!  I'm Kristin, I'm from Maine.  Currently a first year medical student.  My fiance and I are planning a wedding for July 2011.  How are the rest of you handeling planning and school?  Our plan is/was to do the majority of planning during my breaks and some weekends.  However, I'm finding that when I'm supposed to be studying all I can think about is planning.  Any advice?  On the weekends I try to get little fixes during study breaks, but often finding myself spending more time than planned.  Exams are in 2 weeks so this has to come to an abrupt stop..it's crunch time (as I'm sure you are all experiencing).

Re: New to the board - looking for advice

  • Hi Kristin!  Welcome and congrats :)

I am also planning on my way to a higher ed degree- I'm a second year PhD student and FI and I are hopefully getting married August 14th of NEXT SUMMER (hyperventilate).  Planning, especially this early in the game, seems like a TON of fun and that's a really good study break/procrastination vehicle!  However, you also know that your education MUST take a high priority (especially med school!) and you have to maintain with that.  I'm in the throes of finals, committee meeting stuffs, and what I've done for now is break it down to an hour-by-hour schedule: 1 hour studying lecture matierail, rest, 1 hour working on my prospectus, rest, 1 hour studying for my lab practical, rest, then one hour of looking at and plannign wedding stuff.

Where are you and FI getting married?  Is it close by or long distance to where you are at school?  We're getting married in RI (I think) so we're looking and booking venue, florist, and maybe photographer while we're home for Christmas, so I've had to do a lot of research so far.

Just take it in for now, if you're not in a rush to plan, and good luck!

  • Thanks MP!  I have a similair breakdown for my weekends - 2 hrs studying biochem, break, 2 hrs of anatomy, break, 2hrs of physiology, dinner, etc. School is definitely my #1 priority; for one I've worked too hard to get where I'm at now to not succeed and I owe it to my future patients to not just make it through, but really have a good understanding of everything.  Once I open the book and start start studying I'm fine. It's during the breaks that I'll end up spending more time than I should.  For the most part I try to keep my laptop closed while I'm doing work - that way I'm less tempted.  And I try to not spend too many of my breaks doing wedding stuff.  I am also in the middle of preparing for exams..I guess you could call them midterms - we don't operate on semester/trimester scheduling.  Does it ever get better?  I'm hoping that it's just because it's all new and exciting that maybe after Christmas break and we get a lot of things checked off the list I'll be able to focus better.  Maybe?

We're getting married back home, which is about 5 hrs away.

Thanks again!  I'm just curious how other students are handling juggling the workload from school and planning.

  • wish I had some sound advice but I could use some of my own!

I will say while I procrastinate waaaay too much, and spend valuable study time on here  I get it done and you will too.  FI may not like me the night or 2 before a test haha.

Good luck getting your first semester done!  and celebrate the little victories.

  • First off, stop worrying! You have plenty of time to plan! I find that I get a lot done during breaks. I also have a checklist that says when I need to get certain things done. It helps to stay organized when you're trying to balance school and wedding planning. Just try to do the little things when you can and really do a  lot of planning during breaks. But like I said before, don't worry! If you're not getting married till summer of 2011, you have plenty of time to plan!
  • hi kristin!  first of all, congrats!  i'm actually a fourth year medical student (applying for residency now, eek!), so i completely understand how busy the first two years of medical school are.  i definitely think that it's a great idea to try to do most of the planning on weekends and during breaks - my fiance is a third year student, so he's super busy too - we've found that weekends and breaks are the best time to go check places out, as well as to discuss the guest list and other things.  otherwise, we're both too preoccupied with school and everything else!  best of luck!! :)
