Enough Food?

Cocktail Hour
Sliders (mini cheesburgers)
Mashed Potato Bar

Dinner (Buffet)
Prime Rib
Chicken in white wine sauce

Mixed green salad
squash medley
roasted potatoes

Dessert
Cake

Is this enough food? Our reception is at a barn in NC. Don't know if that makes a difference. We are on a limited budget, but don't want to disappoint our guests either... We are more focused on everyone having a good time, drinking some drinks, and then partying... but full stomaches are importatnt too..

I think that's enough, the guests will have a couple of options for apps and main dish and they are substantial enough for people who will also be drinking alcohol.

I think you need more apps and variety during cocktail hour, and to provide four or five different choices.  I would lose the mashed potato bar, it's going to be too filling and messy.  If budget is an issue, I imagine the mini-sliders aren't inexpensive, so you might want to nix those, too.  For inexpensive apps,  I'd go with a cheese display, veggie/dip, a chicken appetizer, mini-pizzas, and another vegetarian option, maybe even the mashed potato bar if you are set on it.  That way people have something to eat during cocktails, without filling up before dinner.

Everything else sounds great.  If you are having a dessert in addition to the wedding cake, you can just serve the cake as dessert and also eliminate that expense.
  • Oddly enough veggies, cheese, or fruit all separate options actually each cost more than sliders or potato bar. We wanted filling apps bc we aren't offering many.

  • It's a lot of potatoes, between the mashed potato bar and the roasted potatoes.  I like the mashed potato bar, could you have a different starch on the buffet?  You don't really have anything for vegetarians, so if you could have pasta primavera or ravioli instead of roasted potatoes, that would provide something more substantial for vegetarians, too (not sure if you think you'll have vegans or vegetarians, but it's good to plan to accomodate, especially if you don't know everyone's SO).
  • I like the ravioli or maybe ziti idea... its not available as a "side" though... it would be considered another entree...but I will look into it... since its a semi destination wedding, our numbers should be lower than we predicted and maybe can add a little to the food budget in the final stages of the wedding.. 3 months to go! invites went out today!!

  • I don't understand why mashed potatoes are considered appetizers these days. I would do something different. Otherwise, I think you are fine.
  • Mash potato bars are interactive, they are too complex to serve during dinner. So we are using it as an appitizer. It's also filling bc we aren't offering a bunch of stations. I think they look really nice in the martini glasses also...

I also agree that it is not enough food. I'd definitely add more to the cocktail hour & add another entree. The pasta entree sounds perfect & should be less than the meat choices. Do you know if your catering company can accomodate any vegans? I ask because I am & sometimes am left eating just the salad. With your current menu, I'd only be able to eat the salad & maybe the roasted potatoes if they didn't use butter. The mashed would have milk & butter. Just something to keep in mind.
  • PP please keep in mind this is not a NJ NY wedding I grew up on Li and know that your cocktail hours are extravagant an amazing! But this this a NC wedding, very different vibe than NY weddings... But being that I grew up with that style that is where my nervousness is coming from. We are on a budget... But I would like to add some more if we can. No vegans will be in attendance, but I do think I'd like a vegetarian option

  • I love the idea of the mashed potato bar. Yum!   I'd personally switch out the roasted potatoes for something else like the others suggested; a pasta entree would be perfect.  I don't think anyone would leave your wedding hungry if you added in the pasta; that way people who aren't really meat n' potatoes folks will have an option.
  • I vote to keep the mashed potato bar!  I've heard they are usually a hit.  I would definitely use a different starch for the dinner though.
