Problems with new workout routine :/

Hi I am new to this board and have spent all morning reading over posts and you all seem really helpful when it comes to advice so I was hoping you could help me.

A week ago I started doing the insanity workout and the week before that I started rock climbing twice a week. I wasn't very active before that maybe going to the 1 or 2 times a week for 30 mins of cardio and 30 mins of weights. The insanity workouts are tough but I dont feel like when I do them I am over doing it though. On Saturday though I was actually shopping for my wedding dress and almost passed out while trying on dresses and felt just weak and fatigued the whole day that I had to switch my rest day for my workout cause there was no way I could have done it without passing out.

I am keeping track of my daily calories in a app similar to MFP and am usually having 1500-1700 calories a day which from what I have read is about right for the level of activity and trying to lose weight. I am not eating quite as healthy as I should be but an average day is eggs or cereal for breakfast, ham or turkey sandwich for lunch, and pasta or chicken and veggies for dinner. I also eat a few snacks during the day like a yogurt or wheat thins.

I am pretty sure I felt like that because of the new workouts but I am not sure what to do to make sure it doesnt happen again and still be able to keep up with the hihg intensity workouts becuase other than that day I am feeling so much better about getting in shape and motivated. I was thinking about adding some sort of protein drink to supplement but am not sure if this would be a good idea or what kind would be best. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

  • Thanks for the ideas!

Ya I used the equation idk the name of it that takes your height, weight, and activity level and then subtract 500 calories for weight loss to figure out that I should be at about 1600 calories doing insanity to lose weight

Most days I drink water all day at work but not as much on the weekend since out doing different things.

Im just worried that eating more I won't lose any weight so hesitant to add anymore since I already feel like I am eating a lot for trying to lose weight.

I hope its just a one time thing with getting used to this workout because I have never had something like that happen before.

  • Yes you definitely need to be drinking water, and I would suggest that you use the meal plan that is included with your program. You need to worry less about the number of calories you eat and more about the quality of the foods you consume.

I did P90x first and now am doing insanity. I consumer more than 2000 calories a day but I have lost 25 pounds and a lot of inches since January 1st. Quality is more important than quantity.

Also, if you bought the program you have a Beachbody coach assigned to you that should be more than able to help you. If you log into your online account at Team Beachbody your coach will be easy to get a hold of. This is what they are there for!

I have also pushed myself too hard on the workouts to try and keep up. Spent a few days resting up from fatigue. There is nothing wrong with slowing down a little and modifying the work out so they are slightly less intense- as long as you use proper from you will still get the full workout!

  • Turtles thats great to hear about your results!

I didn't buy the program my sister copied it from a friends set and I copied them from her so I dont have the nutrition guide or the access to the beachbody extras which I wish I did becuase seems like both would be so helpful.

  • I think it's a little silly to have something like that happen and immediately blame it on your new workout routine.

Sometimes, that stuff just happens.  Maybe it had been too long since you last ate.  Maybe you were dehydrated.

I will say that you may not be eating enough.  I easily burned 400-600 calories a workout doing Insanity, depending on the workout and how I was feeling that day (aka how much effort I could put in).  If you're burning even just 400, and eating 1500, that's not going to be enough fuel.

  • Ya it just seemed like the workout was the only thing that had really changed since I've dieted like this and I had eaten several times and drank a bunch of water but it didn't help cuase that's what I initially thought the cause was too. I'll try eating a little bit more since seems like after this and reading more I probably should be eating a bit more I just wasn't really sure how much an insanity work out really burned. Thanks!

  • Well, I'm a marathoner and run up to 18 miles in a day for workouts. I've never passed out due to working out (unlike some of my eating disordered college teammates). However, I've felt faint when I've skipped a meal.

When did you eat that day? WHAT did you eat that day? Not just calories, but the kinds of calories matter. If your calories aren't substantive (like protein), you'll end up in trouble. Eating sugar, for instance, will cause you a little rush, after which you'll crash hard. Drinking a bunch of caffeine, will cause the same thing.

At the same time, adding a new element to your workout program (or adding a new workout altogether) will fatigue your body. If you want it to adjust, you have to go easy, and give it some time to heal itself. This is why body builders don't hammer the same group of muscles multiple days in a row. They'll go chest/back/legs, arms/abs/calves, and alternate. Runners do something similar. We train hard for about six weeks, then we take a week or two "off" and go easy.

So if you feel fatigued, take it easy for a few days, and then go hard again.

  • For what it's worth, trying on wedding dresses is physically taxing itself.  You're standing for a few hours with no sitting breaks, making elevation change to step into / out of dresses, some dresses are quite heavy, and you're probably not hydrating during the event (or worse, sipping bubbly).  If you're not experiencing these symptoms with anything else after adding Insanity, it's also possible you were just too tired from the act of trying on dresses.
