Surprise Theme

So we haven't really told anyone other than my mom and my sister (MOH), but my fiance and I have planned a few reception decor things to center around a "Fishing Theme."  I know some might say, Fishing theme wedding that's tacky, but that's just who we are!  We are outdoorsy people and love going hiking, camping, fishing, geocatching, on picnics, float trips, etc. In fact he asked my dad's permission to marry me while the two of them were fishing. And then proposed to me while we were camping next to a bonfire under the beautiful stars.  Everyone who knows us, knows we love the outdoors. My dad is an avid fisherman as well, so i wanted to keep a few things a surprise- even to him.  Although our colors are Saphire Blue, Silver and White and i want there to be some elegance to our wedding, we have a few extra surprises up our sleeves.

1. We got a cute Fishing cake topper off Etsy where the Coleman Lantern actually lights up. I've seen some fishing toppers that looked tacky, but i thought this one was really cute.

2. We created a Photo Guest book and most of our engagement photos were outside in a park with a lake as the back drop.

3. We created a sign for our Guest Book table that will stand up on an Easel and has real fishing netting on it, Bobbers, lures and pictures of us scattered across the board.  I spray painted letters in Blue our main wedding color that reads "Great Catch" across the top.

4. The pens to sign our guest book are in an old vintage looking tackle box.

5.  We are going to put small glass bowls at the bar (that look like fish bowls) and fill them with "Gold Fish" crackers.

I know this may sound "hoosier/ tacky/ country" to some people.  But i think our family and friends will get a huge kick out of it and I'm actually mpressed with how everything is turning out and going together. I'm super excited for the big day. 25 days left!

Does anyone else have any "themes" or wedding ceremony secrets?

Re: Surprise Theme

  • That sounds so great!!! My theme is a peacock theme but I absolutely LOVE your surprises!
  • I actually think the theme is cute, and you've done it classy rather than getting super tacky so I think it works well.  No worries.

I don't know if its a theme per se, but we opted to not go with table numbers but with names.  FI and I are HUGE movie buffs, which everyone knows, so we are doing movie table names.  Rather than ordinary table cards, we are doing movie ticket themes ones.

  • I think it sounds adorable!!  Especially the smaller touches - it's not overwhelming.  I did a smallish beach theme for the reception since the wedding is on the beach. Our escort cards are sanddollars in sand, we'll have a few for decorations and also some starfish.  I also bought sand pails for the candy buffet (to put candy in).  The venue said we could do fishbowls filled w/ sand & seashells, but I thought it would make the theme too much.

We're having a rustic, woodland type vibe to our wedding with the decor, but there are a few surprise "nerdy" elements in our reception, which keeps it fun and shows off our personalities.

My FI makes swords and loves weapons, so we are cutting our cake with this gorgeous big, silver dagger instead of a regular knife and server.

We made a wooden guest book and burned the Tree of Gondor into it (from Lord of the Rings, also trees fit into our theme)our names and wedding date are on it too.  His ring also has "one ring to bind them" engraved inside it (also from LOTR).

We have some violin renditions of video game music (namely Zelda and Final Fantasy) on our playlist for during refreshments and mingling.

We love going to movie premieres. On our photo table we're including a picture of us at the premiere of the last Harry Potter and displaying our "wands" next to it.

That's about all I can think of that we have right now, nothing too crazy but I'm excited about it. :)

  • My theme is cherry blossoms. They represent new beginnings and love, plus I have a huge cherry blossom tattoo on my back that will be on proud display. Somehow, I ended up doing a lot of things having to do with rocks as well. It's fitting because my FI IS my rock. We have been thru so much and he's been so strong for me when I needed it the most.  We are having a rock ceremony instead of a unity candle, and my escort card table will have a manzanita branch centerpiece and rocks spread out all over the table to hold up the place cards.

  • Hmm, I don't think I have any surprise touches like that. My theme is vintage elegance and I have a lot of soft cream, pink and yellow. Lots of lace, cut glass & milk glass. I don't know if this will really surprise people. My FI knows everything that we're doing. I just hope that my DOC, who is setting up my tablescapes, will be able to recreate what my florist & I created.
  • I LOVE your surprise theme. That's a great idea, and I admire that you have been able to pull it off! I don't know how I could have kept it a secret. We are going with a nautical theme since we're getting married at the beach. Our colors are navy, white, and yellow, and we're having roped mason jars for vases, star fish foil-stamped napkins, and other little details. Like chickenbut143, I also didn't want to go overboard with it.

We're all going to be posting pictures of our weddings, right? I cannot wait to see how everyone's turned out!

  • @faerylvr27- I'm interested in learning more about the rock ceremony. I've never heard about this one. I've seen the unity candle or the pouring of sand into one jar, but nothing about the rocks.
@chickenbut143--- I love the idea of incorporating the sand-dollars and/ or seashells. I think your fish bowls sounded cute.
@casserole27- wow a dagger....Just make sure nobody gets hurt!

It sounds like everyone has their own unique/ personal touches to their weddings. I know you don't really need a "theme" wedding.  The most important theme is "getting married", but its awesome for people to incorporate their interests and likes into their ceremonies/ receptions.

  • We aren't doing a theme, but I love your cake topper!
