cheap hawaiian honeymoon

We are thinking about hawaii as our honeymoon location, but we aren't sure how to get started on finding the cheapest location, hotel, airfare, etc. At first we were thinking the big island might be cheaper, but then if you are far from the beach it would be expensive to take a taxi every day to get there. Does anyone have any advice about an inexpensive Hawaiian honeymoon?

Re: cheap hawaiian honeymoon

  • There is no such thing as a Hawaii on the cheap.  Everything is expensive there.  But if I were you, I'd probably try a travel agent.

Also, there is SO much to do in Hawaii besides go to the beach.  If you plan on spending every day at the beach, I'd go somewhere cheaper like Mexico.  It would be a shame to spend a ton of money going to Hawaii and then not do any of the amazing things there are to do there.

  • Hawaii is expensive to visit.  Some ways of saving money are renting a condo (as opposed to staying at a hotel) and traveling during low season (October-Dec. and Feb - early April...I believe). It seems like you're in LA so you may be able to get some good deals on airfare.  One thing you will need to do, however, is rent a car.  Good luck!
  • I guess we need to understand "cheap." One thing I've learned on here over the years is that "inexpensive", "cheap", and "budget" mean different things to different people.  The pps were all correct- Hawaii isn't cheap if you are thinking air will be $300pp and hotels will be $200/night. You should look into a condo and you definitely should rent a car.

  • I should have looked before posting! There are tons of posts on this already. But thanks for the advice! I think you are right, a condo would be cheaper than hotel. And from what I understand oahu is the cheapest island? Any other tips? I know hawaii will never be cheap, but cheapest for hawaii. When I travel I usually stay in hostels and am not a fancy traveler, but obviously some privacy is in order this trip!

We honeymooned on Oahu and absolutely loved it, but I wouldn't call it cheap (though I have no idea how it compares to the other islands pricewise.) One thing that might make it cheaper is that you can fly right into Honolulu and not need a connecting flight once there, which some other islands require. You can do it cheaper like PPs have stated by not staying in a hotel, etc. But I would definitely pay for a rental car and explore more than just the Waikiki area.

There are things to do in Oahu that are free or cheap. Pearl Harbor, if you just go to the Arizona, is free. However, I'd recommend checking out some of the other tours they have there-they were very interesting and chances are you'll have to wait for your Arizona time anyhow. Get there early! Like by 7:30. We got there at opening and still had a two-hour wait for our Arizona tour.

Diamond Head is cheap (we drove and I think parking was $8 but that was it) and it had lots of photo ops on the way up and down, as well as at the top obviously.

Driving up to the North Shore and exploring the beaches is free (besides gas) and they have some beautiful beaches up that way! We also got lunch from a shrimp truck for about $12 and the shrimp was wonderful. Some of the places up on the North Shore in the towns there are a lot cheaper than the Waikiki touristy area.

  • Diamond Head is awesome.

I think Hanauma Bay is also inexpensive, and pretty cool.

  • Friends did a cruise of four islands (in 10 days) at a much cheaper price than our two week honeymoon on two islands.
  • It's totally possible to stay on the islands for far less than 200$ a night. I know our wedding guests (we were off season) got condos on Maui at the Polynesian Shores for 99$ a night. It's oceanfront. Another set of friends got plane tickets (from Ontario) to Maui, plus a condo on Kahekili Beach and a rental car for the week for less than 3k. There are tons of great free activities to do on all the islands, and if you're cooking for yourself, you can save a lot there too. Another woman I teach with took her family of 4 to Maui last summer for 4 weeks and they managed it on 4k... So, I'm a big believer of all things being possible if you know how to hunt for deals. Check out the Hawaii Revealed website and do some research on where's good to stay, and then check out VRBO for cheaper condo rentals. http://wizardpub.com
  • Thanks everyone! It seems like with a little research any island is possible. Although i'm sure the cruises are nice we don't fair well on the open sea. Thanks Kaesha for your suggestions! It sounds like we are gonna have fun!
  • We went to Kauai for a week last July, I think it was like a Friday to Friday, leaving out of Minneapolis, we had two layovers (which were very short) and stayed in a cheap hotel.  It was the Aston Aloha beach.  We also had a car rental.  Also the cheapest possible, a nissan cube (which was great for gas mileage).  So basically we went with the cheapest options and it ended up being $1150 per person for the hotel, flight, and car rental.  We just kept watching the flights and just booked at the right time.  While the hotel was old it was still clean.  And to be completely honest with you, we were really only at the hotel from 10 or 11 pm until about 7-8 am.  We were always in the car checking out all of the sites/beaches/etc.  We ate fairly cheap by having subway or cheaper "fast food" places during the day and eating at nicer places at night.  We also went to Walmart and bought a cooler, and made sandwhiches for the beach.  While this doesn't work for everyone.  It was perfect for us. And if I was going to go back to Kauai, I would not spend money on a super nice hotel because for us we are never in the hotel.  So just my two cents.

  • Definately check into a hotel/flight/rental package from a travel agency. Sometimes they can get you the best deals out there instead of trying to peice things together.  We got our beach front hotel at the Marriott/rental SUV/airfair for about 1500 per person. (July time frame)

If you're going to Oahu you'll want a rental car to go outside of the city but EVERYTHING is within walking distance in town.  It's actually a lot less confusing to walk places than it is to try and drive AND find a parking space.  Every other road there seemed to be a one way so imagine our confusion trying to follow our garmin to our hotel parking ramp :/

Food is more expensive there as well, depending on where you're from even the cost of McDonald's may surprise you so be prepared to pay more than you normally would at your local grocery store.
