  Okay, so I live on the water too and I come from a family of boat people, so this is a totally biased response. (Ooh you're from CT, too! My family is from Clinton and right now I live in WH.) But in my family's group of friends, we would find this acceptable. IDK if places like West Marine and Boat US even have registries, but if they did, I would happily buy you some Type 2 throwables.
  
  However, beware that some people (especially if you're having OOT guests) WILL want to buy you typical BBB stuff, so I would make a TINY registry at a store like BBB or Macy's. Then have your mom/FMIL/whoever spread the word that you're saving up to outfit your boat. I still think you could check at some of those boating stores and see if they offer any kind of registry, but also be aware of price ranges and don't register for tons of super expensive equipment.

  I think a boat stuff registry sounds absolutely adorable!!! Your registry should reflect you and what YOU need, and you sound like a unique couple, so I say do it! Just make sure you still register for items in a variety of price points.
  
  It is funny how crazy people get over registries. My fiance and I are doing a fairly traditional registry at a couple of stores, but we keep getting pressure to register at Target. With all the negative things I've heard about Target registry, and since we don't really need anything from there, we're not doing it, but it's funny how insistent people are!

  I think it's ok to register for non-traditional wedding gifts that you will use as a couple.  REI has a registry, you could at least get PFDs there, and maybe some other equipment.  Amazon might be another idea, and you could add things from other stores with the universal registry option.  

  
  

  I would suggest also making a small registry of more traditional items (i.e., housewares) for guests that would like guidance on selecting a mroe traditional gift.

  I think you can absolutely do this and you should! I don't really know any boat people, but I do know several couples who have registered for stuff like camping gear (which seems sort of along the same lines) and I think it's a great idea.
  
  I can't imagine who those people would be who would get their panties in a bunch over having to buy you a life jacket instead of a gravy boat... Surely you're inviting your friends and family to your wedding, right? Not total strangers? People who know and love you and want to get you stuff you actually WANT? Go for it!

  My fiance and I are all for non-traditional registries. We're doing a Honeymoon Registry through Honeymoon Pixie. You could always look into something like that, because you can split up large gifts into smaller ones.

  Thanks ladies!!! My Fiance and I actually started to look at some things tonight and we were able to find a couple things for the kitchen we could likely use that are a little more traditional...
  
  We signed up for one of the universal registries, which my best friend also used and it seems to be set up pretty well... We will soon see I suppose!
  
  

  Ali092011, actually....my Fiance and I have a condo in Branford, but we just bought our new home here in Clinton...we absolutely love it here! What are the chances!!

  Oh that's so funny, glad you're liking Clinton! It's so small compared to Branford, but that gives it a bit of charm! We're just now moving from an apartment in West Haven to a house in West Haven, and we're so excited because the house is closer to the beach and there's a marina next door for when we finally buy a boat. We'd like to move back to C-town someday when we have kids, though. Congratulations on your new home!
