Quick question

I am unsure if this is the correct place to put this but, am I supposed to purchase the cake server and cutter? Or is that an item I get as a gift? I was going to buy it but then someone said no that is a gift you will get! However we don't have a traditional wedding registry and most people know that so I don't have any of that kind of stuff listed.

Is it the sort of cake server and cutter you would use after the wedding or the kind that you would keep on display? If you'll keep using it, it's probably okay to register for it, but it really depends.
In general, though, most people side-eye items that the bride and groom plan on using at the wedding. Some look at it like paying for an element of your wedding, like paying for the guest book or the chair sashes.

  • Unless it's something you're going to use as a keepsake, then I would just go with the knife and server that your caterer provides. Nobody will notice your cake knife and server.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe there is a tradition in that area, or in that family, that a cake knife and server are passed down from generation to generation?  My sister's MIL gave them her cake knife and server from her wedding.....otherwise, she just wasn't going to buy one, but since it was given to her, she just went with it.  KWIM?

  • We got both a cake serving set and a set of toasting flutes without registering for either item.  I have seen the cake serving set on a registry before, and I just assumed the couple would use it when entertaining, I didn't side-eye it at all.
  • I think it depends who said it.  I was about to buy them and then my sister (MOH) said she wanted to buy our cake knife and server and toasting flutes as our shower gift.  Is it possible that the person who said you will get it as a gift intends to be the one giving that gift?
  • No I don't think so it was just a girlfirend that mentioned it. Hm well I will ask my caterer if I have to provide and if so I will just buy. No tradtional/special family heirloom set in my family. Thanks for the replys!
  • If you see something you like when you register, why not register for it?  Then, if you don't receive it, purchase it yourself or use what the caterer has.
