Advice/Motivation for upcoming parties..

We are having a potluck baby shower here at the office for lunch today. Due to my crazy schedule, I got home at 10:00 last night and did not have time to make anything healthy so I am contributing towards the group ordering pizza. I also know people are bringing salad and cupcakes, along with lots of other tasty things. My plan right now is to have 1 cupcake, as these are one of my all time favorite treats and then pretty much help myself to a big portion of salad and maybe some small bit of protien if there is any. I'm just worried that I'll see a ton of other tasty dishes and lose all willpower.

Plus tomorrow, one of my bridesmaids wants to go to the Melting Pot for dinner....what do I do with that?!

Honestly, I always think trying to avoid everything but that 'one favorite treat' at these type of events doesn't work.  Well, I know it doesn't work for me at least :)

My advice would be not to prohibit yourself of everything but the cupcake, but instead to have very small portions of a couple things.  I feel like it's when we try to ban ourselves that we have the greatest failure rate.  So, pick up a scoop, and put 1/4 or a 1/3 of that scoop on your plate, and enjoy a few treats in small portions.  Then you get to feel like you've enjoyed it all, but won't feel nearly as guilty as losing control and just saying 'f it.'

edit: Also, another strategy I use is the 'is it worth it test.'  I'll take a bit, and savor the first bite.  If it tastes only okay or not as good as I hoped, I leave the rest on my plate and move on to sampling something else.  Then I toss the plate so that I don't accidentally eat the rest while I'm bored or distracted.

Melting pot advice:  if you can't ask her to go to a different resteraunt (explain you want to spend time with her but maybe someplace easier to track nutrition and less tempting to go overboard) check out their website tonight.  See what their menu is and if the nutrition facts arent right there then research on your own.  I know the one here has different types of oils to fondue the meats in, check out whats the healthiest.  They also have a variety of lean meats and salads.  Maybe you could each order a salad and do a dark chocolate fondue for dessert?  If all else fails ask the server once you get there.  Maybe they could give you some helpful advice :)

  • hmm.. I think I'm useless on this topic.. I just give in. Those kinds of things only happen every once in a while.. When I know what I'm going to, I will just eat rabbit food the rest of the day so I can splurge on the crap :o) hahaha

Whatever you end up doing, don't beat yourself up. Sometimes we fall off the horse. As long as your are strong enough to get back, that's what counts.

  • Well, as luck would have it the cupcakes were super mini! About 1" diameter. I ate two and it was probably still less than 1/2 cupcake. I made sure to take little bites and really savor them. They also cut the pizza slices into halves and thirds which was awesome.

Lobsters, I took your advice and tried small amounts of everything. I got to have pizza, pita chips, humus, salad, chicken, and pretzle bites. Even with the tiny portions I tried I ended up using up about 600 calories, whic is almost twice my usual lunch. I only have about 200 left for dinner and no time for exercise. Hopefully I can go for a salad for dinner and not go over too badly.

Forgot to mention that this dinner tomorrow is for my friend's birthday, but the good news is that she switched to sushi due to the price at the melting pot. Sushi will be way easier to eat healthy.

  • Even if you end up with like a dinner that's a bit over (200 is very low!) it isn't the end of the world - great job!

Wowza! Thats awsome!  Good for you :)
  • How many calories are you eating a day?  300 calories for lunch normally is NOT much at all.  How do you make it through the day like that?

  • I usually only get about 1200 per day on weekdays that I don't have time for exercise, which is frequent. I often have about 100 cal snack in the afternoon, about 300 for breakfast, and 300 for lunch. It's really hard to pack three meals per day and dinner is often on the go so I have to save some calories for that I usually try to have about 500 left for dinner. I just sit at a desk all day and try to make what I do eat count with whole grains, low fat cheese, fat free yogurt and lots of salad.
