Who is a Jew?

Here's the link to an interesting article in the NY Times about a British court ruling on what defines a Jew. Very interesting, IMHO. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/08/world/europe/08britain.html?pagewanted=1&em

It is interesting, because the school is state-funded it has to abide by these completely pc rules. It should become completely privately funded if it wants to be able to uphold the standards of orthodox Judaism. Thanks for posting!

Wow. Thanks for posting that. I don't read the Times during the week and never would have seen that. What a fascinating article. I find it very frightening that a civil court can dictate to a school who is and is not Jewish and set up standards that don't align with Judaism (the whole thing about going to synagogue as a measure of Judaism). I happen to strongly disagree with the school in its use of Orthodox definitions of who is and isn't a Jew. But I more strongly disagree with a civil court attempting to sort it out. What a mess.

This is just another reason why I don't like government involvement in faith-based programs.  It seems to me that all too often, the result is both that the government subsidy is inefficient and that the religion gets diluted.  Little as I like the Orthodox definition of who is a Jew, it is ludicrous to say that an Orthodox school has to be bound by a definition of who is a Jew that is based on Christian rather than Jewish concepts.

I agree with pp's; I dislike government getting involved in faith-based programs.  There is a reason for separation of church and state, and while I personally don't agree with Othodox definitions of Judaism, I respect the right of the Orthodox to decide for themselves what the criteria are for their educational establishment.
