Wedding in the Fal, honeymoon postponed until spring....

FI just got a nice promotion and new job, but its a transfer between 2 "sister" companies. Its a much better position, but the catch is he can't take his accured vacation time with him. He has to wait a year, then gets 2 weeks paid vacation time. He started yesterday, so he will get his time next January. Long story short, we are planning a fall 2010 wedding but will end up with a postponed "honeymoon" in the spring of 2011. Anyone else postponing the honeymoon, planned or not?

FYI, its not a huge deal to me, I'm an adult and know our future has to come first, just wonderinf if anyone else is in our shoes!

We're doing the same thing, but its due to financial reasons. We're paying for our wedding and while we aren't going broke by any means for it, if we went on a honeymoon now, we wouldn't get the one we really want. Therefore we'll be waiting until next summer to go on one.

Its no big deal, just another fun thing in our life together to look forward too

My cousin also did this when he married his wife this past June, but more for reasons like your own (New job)

We did not HM immediately after our wedding either. Really no biggie, do what works for your situation!

Yep, I know a lot of people who do that, for various reasons. One girl I know is a teacher and she got married in the fall, but they will take their honeymoon this year sometime while school's out. A lot of other couples I know did it just to take some time to save the money. A lot of brides on the boards talk about taking "mini-moons," or a short weekend trip immediately after the wedding, and then do something bigger and more expensive later.

That's so annoying about not being able to take the vacation time. Did he at least take a break between switching jobs?

We wanted to go to Europe on our honeymoon, but it's just not financially possible. We're sticking around in Vegas for a few days after the wedding, so that's sort of our honeymoon, but we plan to take the trip to Europe in a couple of years. I don't think there's anything wrong with putting it off.

Also, I didn't think they could eliminate his accrued vacation time? I know that when I was at Disney they had to pay out any vacation and sick time you'd earned if you left the company or changed positions (say, going from full to part time and no longer earning vacation). Might vary from state to state, but that just sounds weird to me.

We are in a similar situation. I am graduating in May with my Master's Degree in Elementary Education, that said, I have not been truly working since last summer. So my budget is teeeeeny tiny. My parents are paying for the wedding, and the honeymoon is on us. We have decided to use one of my Uncle's vacation homes in Hilton Head, SC for a few days and then on our one year anniversary, we will go on a nice long cruise. I will be working and will be able to take the financial burden off my FH.

At first, I wasn't happy about it, but I realized I was being silly. Like you said, our future comes first, and lots of people do this.

Thanks for all the replies. Like I said, I'm ok with it, after all we wil have time to save & go somewhere nice with going into a huge debt too. Just wanted to know if anyone else had this happen to them.

Also, he is getting paid out his vacation time. It sucks bad that he can't carry it, but its out of our hands. And in today's economy, esp in construction ( his profession), you don't turn down good jobs.

I think we'll do the same thing. Head to a nice hotel for Sat night and come home on Sunday.

His new position puts him in a supervisory position and a lot of it supervising and running 4 or 5 crews. Lot of driving between jobs and office work. His boss told him in this position he can work how he wants as long as the job gets done and he works his minimum 40 hrs a week. He was also told if he needed a day, he could just take time off without pay or he can adjust and work 4 10 hour shifts to take a day. I think he may take Friday before and Monday after that way.

It is nice to hear I'm not alone in this!
