when do you start registering?

I've seen everything from a year out, 6 months, two months, so I have no idea what to think!

You can go ahead and start.  We registered 13 months out and haven't had much of anything get discontinued.  I graduated in May and FI's birthday is in August, mine's in October, and then we're into the holidays.  I got some stuff for graduation, so that's why we did it so early.

It has taken us a loooong time to get it all settled, so I'd at least start making a list of things you need.

  • I registered at 6 months out almost to the day. I think you can go ahead, but you're going to have to keep an eye on things especially in stores that rotate stock by season. Example: I wouldn't register somewhere like Target too far out because they change stock all the time; BBB will probably have most of your kitchen equipment no matter what, but your bedding might be gone. I'm 100 days (!!!!) out now and we've had exactly 3 presents bought so far. Part of it for me is that my shower is going to be exactly a week before the wedding, so I'm not expecting much before then.

  • Whenever you want!  If you do it early (think, register in winter and wedding in summer), then be sure to check your registry a few times.  We had a few items get discontinued on the Crate & Barrel registry.

It's never really too early.  We registered in January, our shower was in June.
  • We registered once our save the dates went out at the 9 month mark.

  • I am getting married a few weeks after you  and we are planning on registering the beginning of October, because our save the dates will go out most likely the end of October or early November. We are also hoping to get some things off of it for Christmas.

  • We registered pretty early (in December, I think) and our wedding's in October.  I think it's fine if you want to do it now.  We only had a few things go out of stock, most everything else was fine :)

  • We got engaged in August and didn't plan on registering right away, but everyone was annoying us!  We ended up registering in October.  My birthday was in November, than Christmas/Hanukkah came as well as us sending out the STDs in December and we got gifts off the registry for all of these.  My shower is Sunday and I think over 100 things on just the one registry have been bought (40 or so were bought before the shower invitations went out).

I really don't think there is a right or wrong time to register.  I wouldn't go around talking about how you are registered, but if people ask, at least you will have an answer!
  • We registered in February for our August wedding. A bunch of things got discontinued, so if you keep an eye on it you can register early. We didn't want to get stuck with a lot of seasonal items that were only around for the holidays, and also to avoid holiday shoppers. We added a number of things online before and after registering in the store. It's really up to you when you want to start.

I'm getting married on June 1st, and we're planning to register right before the holidays. We've already had family members asking us where we're registered and saying that we'll be easy to buy for at Christmas this year, so I want to make things as easy as possible. I figure I'll just keep my eye on it to see if things get discontinued.

  • I'm not registering until about a month before my bridal shower, so 4 months before the big day.  That way everything is still in stock and accurate!  I have a problem with asking for something and then buying it for myself, LOL.
