Question about Parents giving gifts

So my dad brought up a good question that I hadn't thought of....

Are the bride's parents supposed to get the goom a wedding gift?

And similarly are the groom's parents supposed to get the bride a gift?

I don't know if it makes a difference that I am paying for the wedding myself....

I haven't heard of that before. Usually the bride and groom get each other something, but I haven't heard of the parents doing that.

I think normally if the parents give a gift, it is cash to the couple to help pay for the wedding.

My parents have decided to buy my FI a gift, but I have not heard or read of it being customary, proper ettiquette or anything. It also does not mean that I am expecting a gift from FIL's.

I havent heard of that either. DH parents gave us cash to use for our HM and my mom helped us pay for some other wedding stuff. We did however give each other gifts and I bought gifts for both our mothers.
