Re: Fun Questions

  • Yay, more questions!  I'm super bored at work, too.  The project I'm working on is impossible, and my brain is just done for the day.

What is your favorite healthy snack?
Berries and yogurt in the summer, and cucumbers and hummus in the winter.

What food do you love to splurge on?
    Mexican and desserts.
What is your favorite workout to do?
Free weights.  H and I take turns and spot each other, so it's become a fun activity to share.  Plus, I hate cardio.
What is your favorite healthy food to cook at home?
I make a mango vegetarian chili that I love.  That's the food of the moment right now.

Boredom must be running rampant! Now that we're through the holidays things have slowed down to a crawl at work. It's driving me batty!

What is your favorite healthy snack?
I'm a big fan of yogurt, but I also like a wedge of laughing cow cheese with some pretzels as well. Apples are also a great go-to for me.

What food do you love to splurge on?
Ice cream. Oh god, if I thought I could get away with it and not gain a bunch of weight I would be willing to replace my entire day's calories for an enormous helping of ice cream.

What is your favorite workout to do?
I feel like my most effective calorie burner is the elliptical, but my favorite has become Body Combat because it gets my entire body moving and you really get energy from all the other people.

What is your favorite healthy food to cook at home?
I don't think it really qualifies as healthy, but DH and I love to cook thai food and indian food. Super tasty, we just have to be mindful of our portion sizes.

  • What is your favorite healthy snack?
It changes, but right now it is also apples with peanut butter.

What food do you love to splurge on?
Ice cream!  Hands down my favorite food!

What is your favorite workout to do?
A nice run in the sunshine.  I can't wait for spring.  These winter runs are pretty miserable.

What is your favorite healthy food to cook at home?
Anything with seitan (a meat substitute).  I use it in homemade potstickers, so yummy!

  • Lovely,

Homemade pot stickers are amazing!!! I love them and I have figured out how to make Chang sause at home. Its the sauce they serve at PF Changs.

I hope to get fit enough to run because I would love to run in S Fl. I love summers here and I think it would be nice to do that.

  • What is your favorite healthy snack?

Because oranges are in season, they are the snack du-jour for me. I always slice them before I go to work. I'm like a little kid. I also LOVE strawberry ff chobani, but they just went up in price by like 20 cents, so I'm shopping around for a new greek yogurt.

What food do you love to splurge on?

Desserts. Right now I'm living at home with my mom (can't eat hard-to-digest foods like salad, nuts, seeds, etc.) and my brother (human garbage disposal) and cake is a staple at my house :/ I can have will power, but they pressure me! Also, I don't care how gross they are, fast food french fries (fresh ones, not old ones) are my favorite. I've been being much better about cutting them out though!

What is your favorite workout to do?

I LOVE zumba, but it doesn't fit into my schedule right now, so I've been doing a 530 am body pump class with a few friends, and man, it is wayy better with friends!

What is your favorite healthy food to cook at home?

I love fajitas :) I could just eat the chicken & veggies over rice and beans! I also catch flack at home for not using cheese or sour cream...

I can't say enough good things about C25K.  It was my gateway drug into running.

  • Syd,

My house is the same thing!!! My Fi will not diet and he pressures me to eat what he eats all the time...My mom as well. My bro and sister in law are extremly over weight and they complain when I dont eat "enough" for their liking. It drives me crazy!!!
My FI loves tacos and fajitas so I do one portion of rice and ckicken or whatever wrapped in a lettuce leaf and salsa. I skip the sour cream as well but my mom doesnt mind that cause she would eat the whole container if she wanted too.
    I know how you feel!!!

    Thanks

@nike - Body Combat is a Les Mills class. It's basically an instructor up front and you follow the moves they do and it's based in martial arts but is in such a combination that it keeps your heart rate up while working your arms and legs. I highly highly recommend it. I tried Zumba (which is the same "concept") and hated it, but I love body combat because it's much more mechanical in nature than zumba (which is very organic and "dance-y")

@Syndaries - My husband is definitely the cook, but all we do is stir fry veggies (usually baby corn, pea pods and broccoli) and chicken (season to taste, adding soy sauce, a little pad thai sauce and a dash of oil), put them to the side, soak the rice noodles (DO NOT boil them! You soak them in super hot water straight from the tap) for something like 10-15 minutes till they're soft enough, then you throw everything together (preferably in a wok) and stir fry it all together, adding in more of the peanut sauce to taste (some people like it heavier sauce than others). We use Thai Kitchen Stiry Fry Rice Noodles(clicky) and San-J Peanut Sauce (clicky). I know a lot of people make the mistake of boiling the noodles and then they turn into a soggy mess.

Edit: I forgot to mention we also add an egg to the pad thai - you just crack an egg into the wok after everything's been mixed and sort of scramble it in to the rest of the mixture till it's fully cooked.

  • What is your favorite healthy snack?  Lately it's been hummus and cut up veggies.

What food do you love to splurge on? Cheese.  It's terrible because I have lactose issues.  I try and mostly avoid dairy besides cottage cheese which doesn't really bug me.

What is your favorite workout to do?
Right now, NROL... but I like pretty much everything and I've started using a Spin bike and I love it.

What is your favorite healthy food to cook at home?
A brown rice with shredded chicken and baby spinach dinner.  Also spaghetti squash :)
  • Ditto about Stage and having fish in her diet.  H hates it for the most part so I rarely have it.  I used to hate it but it's grown on me.  I'm jonesin' for some sushi right now actually.
  • My extra snack if im under for cals would be butterscotch pudding... I am a sucker for pudding!!!

nike, do you want the recipe?  It doesn't taste fruity, it just rounds out the flavor a bit, and cools some of the spice.

[QUOTE]Ooh, can I add a question?  If you calorie track, and realize at some point in the day hat you have extra calories, what do you use them on? If I have it in the house, I'll eat some frozen yogurt as a final treat before bedtime.  Today I have a ton of extra calories and think I might treat myself to an afternoon coffee.  Normally I skip it as sort of empty calories, but it could be a good fit today.

<div>I am totally guilty of almost always expending those "surprise bonus calories" on junk. Sometimes it's cheetos, sometimes it's a small bowl of cereal, a lot of times it's a jello temptations key lime pie cup (mmmmm) - if I'm feeling good it might be a piece of fruit. There are rare occasions when I realize too late at night that I'm pretty far under and I just go with it.</div>

  • Lobster... Pass it on girl!! Sounds yummy... I will try anything to get new taste into this diet

    Getting Hitches 08/09/2014

  • Here you go - apologies in advace if this doesn't copy and paste well.  This is the original recipe, I just make it with all low sodium beans and whatnot.  I also cut down on the salt in the chili seasoning replacement.

    Mango Chili-
2 cans (10 oz, each) Mexican diced tomatoes, (Ro-Tel brand)
1 packet chili seasoning mix from McCormick OR: 2 tbsp Chili Powder, 1 tbsp Cumin, 1 tbsp salt
    1 tbsp curry powder
    3 tbsp tomato paste
¾ cups Mango juice or mango nectar
¼ cup water with 2 tsp sugar dissolved OR ¼ cup Malibu Mango rum
1 can (15 oz) pinto beans, drained
1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained
1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained
1 can (15 oz) cannellini beans, drained
2 cups frozen mango chunks, (Dole is recommended)

Combine first 6 ingredients in slow cooker. Mix well. Add the beans and mango chunks. Mix well. Cover and cook on high for 4 to 6 hours OR low for 8 to 10 hours.

  • Awesome!  Thanks for sharing!  I have a lot of things to try between this and kwith's edamame salad.
  • H does not know my phone number or email.  I mean he "knows" but it takes him so long to remember.
  • @Entropic: Thanks! we've bought packages, looked up recipes, and have followed the directions to the T... They just always taste like crap!

@kwith: I'm actually eating that this week, but I don't like it as much! they must use a different type of sweetener, because I can TOTALLY taste the difference.  :/

  • I'm a fan of the Dannon greek yogurt, it's probably slightly sweeter than other greek yogurts, but it also has the nicest texture to me.
    image
  • I think Greek yogurt is the food I miss the most.  I just cannot handle it stomach-wise.  It is SO delicious and yummy though.  I might try eating it again in small quantities on non workout days or days I know I will be home and comfortable in sweats ;)
  • I could never get into greek yogurt... I wish I could because it looks good. I like regular yogurt so I guess I dont understand the difference but I taste one.

    Getting Hitches 08/09/2014

  • @Nike - when I first discovered how much better for me Greek yogurt was, DH and I went to the store and bought similar flavors in every different kind, then we sampled them together and figured out which ones we liked and which ones we didn't like. It's actually pretty amazing how different they all tasted and how different the textures could be. You might find a brand that is acceptable for you and come around to it! It's worth trying - it's like a super food :)
