church wedding without any prerequisites?

Our reception is at Oakhurst Country Club but we would like to have the ceremony else where.  Alot of churches seem to have requirements before marrying.  While at one time we were practicing Catholics we no longer attend church.  Are there any nice churches in the area that would allow for us to get married without the premarital counseling?

Detroit Churches are an option.

It might matter how many people you anticipate having at the ceremony. Not sure if you are talking about Catholic Churches, but based on the years I've been around the Knot, they will all have some form of pre-requisite such as being a member and having counseling.

Our ceremony was at the chapel at Greenmead Village in Livonia (corner of Newburgh Rd and 8 Mile, just east of I-275). Max capacity is 100, although I suspect it might hold a bit more. It's non-denominational, there is a rental of about $300-$400, and you provide your own officiant. There is also an historic chapel in Troy and I think one in Shelby Twp/Utica, but you'd have to find the info on them by an internet search, I don't know anything about them.
  • Most churches I know of require premarital olbigations. I personally am all for that, its made us really talk about things and see things differently that we hadnt before. Even if you think your relationship is perfect and you communicate flawlessly, it can still help. If you are totally against that, and do want to practice the faith, then I would look into a chapel or nondenomiational place. Best of luck in your search!

  • I agree with PPs. Even my friends who brought in a pastor from a nondenominational church had to meet with him prior to the wedding. Not sure if he req'd any counseling.

In our (Catholic) church, we just had to meet with a married couple who were members of the church. We REALLY enjoyed this. They were quite a bit older than us, so one might wonder what there was to talk about, but we found that H and I talked more to each other than we did to them, and they were just kind of there to facilitate and listen. Even H enjoyed this time together. It didn't bring up anything new or resolve any of our "issues" -- but it was a nice way to start things off, and even a nice way to spend some time focusing on us during the wedding planning process.

Call a Unitarian Universalist Church. I am getting married at the Farmington church, but there is on in Troy, Detroit, Southfield, Ann Arbor and Gross Pointe.
