Invitation proof-read please

The pleasure of your company is requested at the marriage of Bride And Groom On Saturday, the twenty-fifth of August Two thousand twelve at three thirty in the afternoon Location Address City Reception will follow. I need help with the last line. Ceremony is at 3:30 and dinner will be at 6 at the same location. The wedding takes place at a park, and there will be refreshments and park games set up if people want to hang around the area. Should I leave it at just "reception will follow" or somehow specify the time of dinner? I have one line reserved on the invite for the reception, so I want to keep it short. Thanks!

  • Even with the two hour gap, should I keep it with "reception to follow"?

If the reception isn't going to start until two hours after the ceremony, then it really isn't "reception to follow."  Two hours is an awful long time for people to hang around waiting for the reception to start.  Why can't you move it up so it follows the ceremony, or move the start time of the ceremony closer to the reception time.

If you insist on keeping the gap, then put "Reception at six o'clock" so people at least know that they're going to have to wait around and can decide whether they want to wait, attend just the ceremony, or attend just the reception.  You do stand the risk of losing some of your guests with a two hour wait.

If I received an invitation with "reception to follow" and then had to wait two hours, I'd be livid.
  • What about "dinner will be served at six o'clock"? Because there will be things to do, eat, drink following the ceremony but no formal dinner until 6:00.

If you're essentially having a cocktail hour from the time the ceremony ends, then serving dinner, plan to serve your dinner at 5PM rather than 6PM.  That way you have an hour with drinks and appetizers, which is normal.  A two hour cocktail hour is too long.

If you move the meal up to 5PM, then you can legitimately say reception to follow.
