Zumba... Rants/Raves??

FI and I joined a local gym... and they're offering zumba classes. We're interested cause we want to work out together- but we CANNOT dance to save our lives...  Do you think it would be too girly?? Thoughts???

HAHAH there are guys that take Zumba at my gym (LA Fitness). I'd go and try it out. It can be frustrating at first, especially if you can't get the moves down  (kinda like intense aerobics). But once you get through a class you'll see if you like it! I really enjoy it. I skip classes for a while because the dances get boring- but they change them up frequently.

Lovveeee Zumba!! I haven't seen any guys do it. The zumba inteventor is a male though. Personally, not something I would do with my FI. But who knows, he might enjoy it!

honestly, i'm not a zumba fan.  i love love love to dance, and zumba just feels too much like an old school step class to me or something lol

however, i went for the first time with a friend who has 2 left feet for sure, and she found it complicated but fun.  she needed a few times to pick up on the steps, but after that she loved it!

i can tell you that DH would never be caught dead in zumba hahaha.  he's more a crossfit or MMA kinda guy...and come to think of it, i've never seen a guy in zumba!  i'd say stalk the class at your gym before your FI goes...see if there are other guys in there...

Also, try different instructors if the class wasn't what you want/expect. The first one I went to was the AARP version of zumba. I was bored!! As soon as my heart started to beat faster she'd say, "now lets slow it down a bit." Then, I went and took a class at another gym..that I am now joining. It is upbeat, fun, and quite the workout! The instructor adds a lot of hip hop elements to it...and a lot of sexy sexy moves! Then, she had a sub the other week who did some crazy squats and more traditional gym moves with it. So find the class that works for you!

Oh, p.s., I kinda like that my zumba classes are female only. There's things you shake that I didn't even know could be shook! Maybe it's because I feel good about my progress, but I find the class I take now very empowering. I'd be less comfortable with a straight male in the class.

Hahaha sorry to hog your post. I just really like Zumba.

I recently tried Zumba for the first time and loved it. You don't need to know how to dance to enjoy it and get a good workout - you'll pick up the steps after a few classes and start feeling more coordinated but it's really a blast. I will say, though, that there was not a single male in the class I took but about 50 women (of all ages and fitness levels). So I'm not sure it's a guy thing - seems way more popular with women.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Zumba!!!  I know my FI would never take it either, but you should defiantly take a class!!  It is such a great workout that doesn't feel like a workout!  I usually burn between 750 - 950 cals in the class alone!

Thanks girls!!! FI and I will definitely stalk the zumba class... Maybe FI and I can try it out with some zumba clips from Youtube for now!! I can wirelessly connect my laptop to the tv. (o:

Sandra - We looked into zumba because FI saw "Latin dancing"- and he reeally wants me to learn how to salsa & etc. It's part of his culture! He thinks this is a step into having me into learning. LOL!

smore154 - FI and I were gonna join the LA Fitness in Newington, but the man who gave us a tour was so RUDE. He was pushy, too... and just kept trying to get us to join. We ended up joining Bally brcause we could basically walk there from our apartment, and we're able to go to any of the Ballys in RI and MA (there's one in my hometown and about 7 or 8 in his hometown) for free. I like the idea of an all-girls class though... !

That totally stinks. That's the one we go to- we joined and had a nice guy walk us around. The main reason we joined though was that I get a really heavy discount through my company (wellness reimbursement programs), so it's cheap. I've heard Bally's is great though! THat is awesome- you guys should definately stalk the class and if you don't do it together you should at least try it, you'll like it. (I also stumbled across some boring instructors so you might wanna try a few diff days).

I LOVE Zumba! And previous posters are right, you really need to find the right instructor that fits your tastes. I go to Healthtrax in Newington (which can be kind of pricy, but I get a discount from work AND it comes right out of my paycheck which makes it a little easier to swallow), and they offer it on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. I only go to the Wednesday class because the instructor is phenomenal: high energy, great music and moves, I totally get a serious workout.

My FI does it with me and he loves it too. There are also a few other men in our class. Doesn't bother me at all, I actually like having them in there! They are too busy sweating and trying to do the moves themselves that they definetly aren't paying attention to anyone else.

I'm also a major zumba fan. I started taking the classes at my gym and love LOVE it. It's the first work out I've ever tried that I stuck with for more than a month. The instructor makes a big difference as the other girls have said. If you don't like 1 instructor, don't lose hope! I love it so much that I've changed my work schedule to be able to make it to more classes. I've also gotten dance sneakers and a hip scarf so that when I shake my booty it jingles. I know...I'm a loser, but lots of people in my class have them and it makes it even more fun. I have no rhythm, but I still have fun in the classes. My Dad sent me the Zumba Total Fitness DVD's for my birthday as well. They are a little different from the live classes in the way that the moves are harder. I do have a guy that regularly attends my class, and he is awesome at it. My FI does the Zumba DVD's with me at home, but would never be caught dead in a live class lol.

I've been teaching Zumba for about 2 years now and I've lost about 50 lbs. It's a great program, but like others have said it really depends on the instructor. Go to www.zumba.com and search for instructors in your area. Most of them have contact information, so maybe the best thing to do first is email them and ask them if you can try out a class. I don't teach in CT, but feel free to msg me if you have any other specific questions about the program!
