Ring Cleaner?

Do you ladies use any at home cleaners for your engagement/wedding rings for in between professional cleanings?

I've googled/heard from others that windex and regular dawn dish soap in hot water does the trick. I've tried it, and it really makes them sparkle. But I wasn't sure if there was anything else I could try. I often wonder how safe the windex really is...

Anyway, just curious!

    There is one in a red bottle that I use from WalMart and it works great but I can't remember the name :/

    I've actually heard not to use those kind of cleaners, because they have harsh chemicals in them....

    Not sure how true that is or not. But, I used to use them too, then I stopped when I heard that.

    I know that the place I got my ring (Jareds) does them for free. Maybe yours might, then you could just swing by once a month or something :)

    Yeah, mine does it for free too.

    But my ring gets dirty really quickly because of the setting, so it needs to be cleaned often or it starts looking yucky. The setting has princess cut channel set diamonds on the sides, and those collect dirt like none other for some reason!

    i'd ask your jeweler what they recommend in between cleanings... i've never heard that about the jewelry cleaners! i'll probably stop using mine now too haha

    I know that my jeweler also sells ring cleaning solution....you might be able to buy a good one from your jeweler (or any jeweler)

    I'm sure that they'd be willing to clean it as often as you would like it cleaned.  I know that Jared likes to see them every six months to check the integrity of the ring.

    I got some solution from my jeweler.   I don't think they would be selling it if it hurt the jewelry.    I've heard of that in the past, but I'm pretty sure they had to have changed the formulas or they would no longer be on the market.

    I saw this awesome Sharper Image steam jewelry cleaner in SkyMall.   It was $100 so I didn't buy it, but now I wish I had.

    This. I got it from Jared's not Walmart, but I've seen it there. They said it's ok to use inbetween cleaning, but they don't mind me coming in whenever to have it cleaned. I just don't want to drive out there to get my ring cleaned everytime. Like other PP have to go in every 6 months too.

    FI parents are jewelers.  They use half windex half water and it works perfect.  We have a sonicator though (even in my work lab, yay!)... I think they sell a home version?

    Anyways... 15 minutes with the windex/water solution and it was perfectly sparkly.  The sonicator gets into the cracks and gets all the dirt out.

    The jeweler we used said that dish soap and warm water is the best.  So you're already on the right path!!  Although, I have used the red bottle stuff, but I drop it in there and take right back out.  So it's not just sitting in there.  Not sure if it matters, but I'd like to think it does!! Tongue out

    Fast fix does it for free also... they are located at Vista Ridge Mall, North Park and the galleria... I have taken mine twice... My ring was FI's grandmother's ring... and it tends to stop shining quickly...but I am so in love with it!!!

    Thanks ladies!!

    The reason I don't want to take it up there weekly, or however often I want to clean it, is because that's kind of a pain in the butt. I clean it weekly, if not a couple times a week to get the film off that collects on the channel set stones. So, there's no way I'm making trips to the store that often.

    Ben cleans my ring every Sunday in Dawn/hot water/Windex.  It looks awesome every time and stays beautiful all week.

    He took my ring in to our jeweler for a bent prong and he cleaned it and it was spectacular--like nothing I had ever seen.  So it's definitely nice when you can do that every once in a while.

    I love taking mine into the jeweler for cleaning.  I used to work across the street from Fullers, where he got the ring.  I'd just stop by during lunch once a week.  :)

    Now that we have moved, I'm not as lucky.  I bought some 'natural' jewelry cleaner at the bridal show.  I like it, and think that it works well in between.

    I've heard that if you get your ring cleaned to much in those ultra sonic machine that it could loosen the stones from the setting.

    I have used the red bottle cleaner before now I'm not sure if I will continue since y'all stated it could potentially have harsh chemicals.

    My Nana always used a toothbrush and toothpaste so that's what I have always done and it makes it sparkle so pretty!

    This is true, but that's what the jewelry stores do when you take it in.

    Depending on the metal that is used for your band, it might roughen it a little.  Toothpaste has fine abrasive particles in it and can/will scratch the metal depending on what it is.  Gold is pretty soft and platinum is "harder" but can still be scratched.

    Which is exactly why I don't want to have it cleaned at the store frequently. My setting has lots of tiny stones in it, that are likely to be knocked loose. Which is the whole reason I want a home remedy for cleaning. I would like to keep the professional cleanings down to once every 4-6 months, if possible.

    I bought some at a bridal show that works really well. Whether it's harsh or not, I don't know. But then again, mine is a solitaire, so it doesn't need cleaning very often. It has two parts - a scrub and a pink solution. I love it!

    I got mine cleaned at Jared today and they sell the Sonic cleaners there. Don't know how much they run though. My mom (a former jeweler) said dish soap is fine for softer stones (like Aquamarine) but she doesn't recommend for diamonds.
