OMG y'all has this happened to you

A company called my H's cell phone and said they were the united states legal investigation dept. They told my H he was under investigation and he needed to call them immediately. They also called my H's BF looking for Ricky and said the same thing to BF. We were freaking b/c we didn't know WTF was going on. We have clean records.

So, Ricky did some investigation and it's a scam. The number the scammers call from is based in another county but the number the scammers left on my H's voice mail was from a FL. landline. The people who call have THICK Indian accents and claim to be people named Bob Smith or Robert whatever.

Ricky called them back and a woman told him that he owed money on a loan he took out and that if did not pay it he would be sent to jail. We never took out any loans we never paid back so we know they are lying. The people repeated Ricky's SS# back to him. So they have his name and SS #.

Ricky told the woman that if they have a charge against him, they can send it to him in writing. He also told her he knew it was a scam and that if they called his friends, him, or family again he would
contact the authorities. The woman yelled at him and told him to stick his information up his ass. LOL.

They have since called my H's work and his mother. They repeated Ricky's SS# back to one of Ricky's employees trying to get the employee to verify the SS number, of course she said no.

Can anything be done about this?  We have already handled bank and credit card stuff so they can't drain us. It just worries me that they have his name and SS.

Re: OMG y'all has this happened to you

  • Have the guy run a credit report through all three agencies and report any and all concerns. I would also let them know that there is a scam going on, etc.
  • That's scary.

You can report it to your state's consumer protection division.  But I'm not sure there is really much they can do...

He should change his phone number so he doesn't get called anymore, and, alert your bank to watch for possible unnauthorized charges or new accounts in their name?

  • Your H & Ricky.. and whoever else's SSN is floating around this scamming place.

  • I would call the police local to the area where the Landline they gave you is and report it to their fraud investigation department.  If they don't have one of those departments just report it to whoever you can there.

I would also keep a very close eye on your credit transactions in the future.  If they have all the information you said they do they could potentially use it to get credit cards in his name.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I had a call like that a while ago. They said they needed to update me information for something. I had a hard time understanding them, so I just kep saying, "what? what?" and finally I flat out said I couldn't understand them and they gave up. They haven't called since then.

  • Holy crap Ang, thats scary.
I don't know much about what to do, besides putting a fraud alert in with the credit bureaus. That way anytime new credit is applied for, they have to call you. It can be a PITA, but like betrothed said,if they have that much info, they could potentially open cc's.

Oh okay lol. Duhh. He put a freeze on his credit reports.

  • You can make a change with the credit bureaus that will not allow anyone to open any new credit up under your name. If you want to open a new line of credit, you will have to go through a long verification process, but at least no one can open any new accounts under your name. I HIGHLY recommend calling all three companies right now.

  • Ha! GL trying to open a CC in our names. We are maxed out. We have CC companies closing our accounts (even though we pay on time) b/c we own so much, which is fine b/c we are tyring to get out of debt.

  • Holy damn that's scary. I don't know what to do other than what B said about contacting the local FL police since you have their phone number. Or maybe talk to a lawyer who specializes in that kind of fraud to make sure you're protected on all ends.
  • I think H is calling the FL police Dept. today.

  • You can also report this to the FTC (they care about telemarketers and spam callers).

And I'd also suggest registering your home, work, and cell phone numbers on the DO NOT CALL list.

  • We did registered for the DNCL like 2 years ago.

Thanks for the other link. I will get in touch with them.

Some what to do info if you suspect your identity has been stolen, and it sounds like it has, even if they don't manage to open new accounts or whatnot.

Really though, calling someone and reading their SS# to them doesn't sound like a smart way to steal their identity.  You'd think they'd want to keep it a little more under the radar.  These are probably not the brightest crayons you're dealing with.

I encounter a lot of this at my job and let me tell you most of the people doing this type of stuff are not too bright at all.

  • I would have your H notify his employer.  A few weeks ago I started getting a bunch of messages about a loan that I supposedly had with one of those cash advance chains.  THe number on caller ID was always different and it just listed a city and state...one was from FL though. ( the only other specific one that I remember was Lansing MI)  My SS number never came up, but I got an email from our corporate payroll dept saying that they got a bogus wage garnishment form.  I guess it was a pretty good copy of a court document, but it threw them off because the garnishment papers said to withhold 75% of my gross income.  They checked out the paperwork and it was bogus, so was the account that they were suppose to send the money to.  Never hurts to be safe with all of the scams people are running.

  • ricksang.. I highly suggest your husband contacts your local police dept. This sounds like a case of stolen identity but also .. they are harassing him. Chances are.. ur H isnt the only person this has happened to and your local dept may have info or be able to get this. When I worked in news.. we ran stories on a few of these scams that seemed to pop up at random and target a few people in our state and many outside the state...

  • Everyone has given you some good advice.

You can also look at a few consumer reporter websites to see if they have heard of this particular scam.  Clark Howard (www.clarkhoward.com) is a good one as is Dave Ramsey.  They may have other info on their sites.
  • I am with the others- call the police. If this is fraud as you suspect, it's a federal offence and (well, at least here) there are specific police teams who investigate such activity.
