Dieting (and let's throw in some meno too)

Sorry, it'll be a post and sleep since I took my allergy meds already.

I've got the mid-section weight blues.  Anyone else?  Since menopause, I just can't shake it loose.  I've also got some undiagnosed auto-immune thang going as well as Type II diabetes and all this and the meno hit me at once almost 3 years ago.

I'm going to cut out sugar as much as I can and get more protein in my diet.  Hopefully that's going to help and it probably will, but maybe not in the mid-section.

Ideas?

I've got the mid-section weight blues

I'm singing those same weight blues with ya sister!

It's been 4-5 years since I had my last regular period. About 3 yrs ago I joined WW and lost over 20 lbs, got to a size 6-8, attained my lifetime membership weight, then maintained a while and the lbs crept back up. I'm back on it now, but if I don't write everything down, don't lose it very fast as I did the first time.

The bulk of the weight is in my tummy area, with a little spread around the "love handle" area. With WW I have to be disciplined to eat a good mix of food. Plus, I'm not going to meetings, just doing it at home with my little WW calculator.

I don't know about food "mixes" for weight loss. I do know that eating a lot of fiber helps me, and I drink a fiber drink every morning.

Turning the jelly-belly tummy into a thinner, more svelte look is tough. I know once the weather gets and STAYS better I'll be out walking in the evenings, because I can't lose the weight as easily as I did just 3 years ago. Working at home for the past 2 years doesn't help either, because I no longer even have to walk from the parking garage to the building.............ugh!

We have a "lose the lbs" sticky on my month board and check in regularly, but honestly, I read these young bride's posts about their cardio, weight training, etc, and just want to cry. All I want to do is fight this battle of the tummy bulge, LOL.

God I could never keep up with some of the girls who post on GIS.

Yesterday I did mostly protein with very little sugar and you know what?  My mid section didn't feel as bloated and gross.  Today is Day 2.  It's easy with H gone tho.  I don't have to cook for anyone.  His son who lives with us prefers to go out to eat with friends and bring home take-away.  I'll just need to start planning menus we can all enjoy once H is back.

I've been singing those blues since I was a kid, lol! I'm trying to eat healthier too, but I admit that because i've been so depressed, i'm not doing as well as I could be with that. Hopefully it'll get better in the coming weeks. :)

It's going to help that my co-worker is on board with cutting out the sugar and cutting down on the carbs.  We work in a pretty stressful situation with a crazy-ass doctor so we tend to snack on a lot of comfort type stuff.  We had a woman who used to work with us and then quit to go to another practice.  About 1 month or so after she left she stopped back to say hi and she had lost weight and looked good.  She said it was the comfort food snacking at our clinic that put the pounds on her and now I believe it.

Stress does not help either, some people gain weight when stressed and there are several contributing factors.  Comfort snacking, lack of proper sleep, lack of proper hydration and of course lack of healthy exercise.

Being aware of what is going on and why helps, and making changes to your diet should help.  I know about taking weight off, I did it by portion control, reducing refined sugar, refined flour and carbs that have a high glucose index; increasing fiber in my diet, increasing my water intake, increasing  my protein intake as well.  The first three months were the toughest but I had started seeing results so that provided motivation.

The easiest way to judge portions is by using your dominate hand - make a fist that is the size of your stomach when you wake up.  The idea is not to stretch it out past it's resting point. So basically what you do is limit your solid food portions to that amount. It's tough but after a few days you get used to it and your tummy will actually let you know when it's full and the signal is clearer. Sometimes when going to this type of portion control your tummy will want to be fed more often than 3 times a day, just keep the foods healthy and portions in line and it's okay to have 6 small meals a day.

    I hope this helps...

    Hey Marrin!
    Oh how I can relate.
All of the principles that Angie brings up are part of Weight Watchers diet. I lost 30lbs over about 18 months prior to the wedding. I didn't exercise as much as I should have.

The weight started to creep back over the last 6 months of happy married life. Man getting into the dress, and being in front of a crowd is motivating. I loved how my tummy shrank and I actually wore a modest bikini on the HM. I was really happy at how I looked and felt. I have gained 1o pounds back and so unhappy about it.

Now the tummy is coming back and I HATE IT!!!! I started a mild weight program. When you use 5-8 lb weights at home for 20 minutes it really works!!! I also do a moderate cardio every other day too. as well as staying on the WW program. I am doing WW on line now. I used to go to the meetings and that accountability to one's self at the weigh in is powerful.

Now I need to lose 10 lbs before summer and keep it up for a lifetime, the lifetime part is the hard part. When you reach the goal you have to make a new goal I guess to stick with it. Good luck and keep me posted. The headache will only last a day, or maybe 2. When you stop eating all the sugar, and carbs, you stop craving it. WW has tons and tons of great recipes on line too!

I would ideally like to lose 15-20 lbs by summer but if I end up with 10 off I will be happy.  It's just this dang midsection!  After a moderately good few days with very little sugar and carbs, I "feel" svelter in the midsection.

It's been easy with Terry gone and he'll be home tomorrow so I'll just have to be strong.  I know too from going low carb and no sugar about a year ago I also had more energy.
