Help me be someone that doesn't kill plants.

At the new house, we have a spot along the side of the house for a garden.  It's already all garden-ed up, we'd just need to plant stuff.  I've always been sort of a plant killer, but I can do simple things.

The garden area is on the WSW side of the house.  Really mostly west, but angled a tiny bit south.  It's partial sun.  Any suggestions for easy things that are also pretty?

Also, I'm considering doing vegetables there instead of flowers.  Is that stupid?  I do better with veggies than flowers.

  • Not stupid at all.  Veggies are wonderful.

If you do decide on flowers, mums do really well with minimal (no real) work.  They're just pretty and green most of the spring/summer and then you get beautiful colors all fall.
  • Just get bamboo. It's indestructible.
  • WHAT'S THAT NEIGHBORS?  YOU CAN'T SEE OUR HOUSE THROUGH THE BAMBOO FOREST?!  Good.

  • I LOVE LILACS.

But I'm so allergic to them. :(

  • I would do vegetables. Try something easy like beans and tomatoes.

  • haha I can only see your posts, J. It looks like you're talking to yourself.

Oh.. the whole lot line in our backyard is lilac bushes. I love them for about 2 weeks. They are fucking ugly in the winter though, let me tell you. And they're like damn weeds.
  • I KNOW I can grow tomatoes, Blue!  I do tomatoes every year :)

Edie, I do.  I have a GF board.  But I haven't been on Pinterest in a long tme.  I used to do most of my pinning at my old job.  Now, at home, Pinterest makes my laptop super hot, and since it's old and I'm trying to keep it hanging on for as long as possible, I do whatever I can to avoid stressing it out.  Haha!

Our SW flower garden is full of alliums, hostas, poppies, ummmmm lillies, echenacia, clematis on the fence, a smoke bush, annnnnd i dunno what else. Purple stuff. Its the purple garden. Honest to god though, other than raking it out in the spring and pulling some dead things off once in a while, we hardly tend it.
  • Nebb, I don't know what most of those things are, but I love lillies!  I'll be googling the rest.  Thanks!

Im gonna try to figure out what else is in there and maybe find a pic for you. Its the easiest garden and its partial sun as well. The allium is GORGEOUS when its blooming though, its my favourite.
    Alliums:

    Clematis:

    Big yellow daisys:

I cant find any other pictures of anything I can identify or large photos of the garden. Its about 30 feet long though and full of stuff. It blooms all summer.
  • That would be awesome :)

  • Hosta is great stuff.  I am also kind of a plant killer and so is my mom, but I've never been able to kill that, or the daisies that grow out of control every year, no matter what (however the daisies are in the NW corner of the yard and get pretty much full sun).  We don't have much on the west or Southside of our house, just some hosta and some other shrubs that were planted when we moved in.

FI killed a bamboo plant once.  He fed it miracle-gro, and it was never the same and eventually died.

  • I was going to suggest hostas too. They are also indestructible. But they spread like crazy. You can get some really cool looking ones.  Maybe I'll do those by my mailbox...

So, uh, Nebb? When are you coming to visit to design my garden?

lol :P its easy. I find all you need to do is plant perennials that bloom at different times and different heights and space them out. I dont think you can cost effectively do it in one year. We add 4-5 types a year just to keep things fresh and looking a bit different.

    <div>That doesn't sound easy to me. ;)</div><div>
</div><div>And yeah. I'm worried about cost. I want to get SOMETHING started this year though.  H is moving the big shed to the back corner of the yard (mostly to block our neighbors ha.) The spot where it is now will be perfect for a garden. Maybe we'll just do veggies this year.</div>

Its not that hard, just read the write up about them on the tag or sign at the nursery. Buy things that look nice to you and it will just come together. You dont have to be too fussy about it.
