I keep having a terrible recurring nightmare....

My son has severe peanut allergies... and I keep having this terrible nightmare that the food is tainted with nuts and he has an anaphlaxis reaction and has to go to the hospital!

We have our finals meeting next week and of course I will tell the planner at the reception site again the importance of the entire meal being nut free.

They cake is offered with our package but made at a different site.. heading off to find their number and call them now to make sure they can accomadate.

Surely I am not the first with these requests.. any suggestions??

Re: I keep having a terrible recurring nightmare....

  • This is totally a legitimate concern.  Have you brought it up with them before?  I would ask for the number of the cake place just to emphasize the importance of this.  Also, make sure that it is in huge print on the contract so that there is no confusion.

Does your son carry an epi-pen?
  • No, sounds like you're doing what you should be.

  • Oops, didn't see that you already had the cake places number!  Sorry!

Maybe remind them like a week before?  But other than that, I think you are doing everything you can.

  • I would just make sure everyone from your caterer to your baker and your venue know of this and I'm sure they will do everything in their power to make sure everything is safe for your son.  I would bet you are not the first with this kind of request and everyone involved should be able to accomodate you request.
  • My RB is allergic to nuts as well and has very severe allergies.  We have discussed this and my caterer said he won't bring in any nuts/nut products into the kitchen at the venue that day and our cake baker is a speciality shop with peanut alleries.  I spoke to a caterer that asked me if my friends and family could just deal with their allergies and just suck it up for the day because she wouldn't do anything to help make sure the food was allergen-free.

  • Thanks guys, you all made me feel better.. I talked with the bakery. She is a super sweet lady, she did tell me they do some things in shop with nuts, but will take every single precaution to make sure that nothing comes in contact with our cake. Her kids have friends w/ nut allergies, so it makes me feel better that she has dealt with it first hand and knows how serious it is.

Michelle- WHAT? suck it up.. its not a food dislike, its an allergy! holy cow.. I really don't understand how people think it is no big deal. But I also think in the food service industry you have both extremes... people that are careful b/c they know someone or have an allergy themselves, and some people that just don't take it seriously b/c for years they have been lied to by customers that say they are allergic to onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc. (whatever they don't like) and yet eat something else with it.. I think it dilutes the severity of someones true allergy. I actually just found a great site that has these cards http://www.achooallergy.com/foodallergycards.asp I am going to order them for my son. I think that when he is out with his friends at a restuarant alone it would be easier to just hand the server one, and it will make the server take him more serious.. not just a kid being difficult.
