  I have a plain solitaire (it's a 100-year old family heirloom) and am planning to get a plain gold band to go with it, probably one a bit thicker than the e-ring band, which is quite slim.

  I chose an insert to go with mine.  I have the traditional tiffany setting and my wedding has a vintage yet modern feel to it.  I didn't get it sized yet because we have some time, but once I saw it I knew I had to have it.

Your best bet is to take the ring into a jeweler and try on various bands to see what you like best with it. You could do a Google Image search, too, and find many examples of solitaires and various styles of wedding bands. GL! ETA: <strong>tiny's plan is classic and lovely, IMHO</strong>.
