Hand Cancelling and other PO lies

So I was talking to my post office about hand cancelling my invitations.  They told me they dont do it themselves but I could use the stamp to do it.  BUT then they said that it really didn't matter.  That all mail (envelopes) regardless of how it is stamped goes through a machine.  They said long ago hand cancelled envelopes were handled differently but that today that is no longer the case.  Everything is electronic and all mail must be counted.  Soooo basically they said they give hand cancelling stamps to us brides because we are convinced that is the way to do it and they are trying to humor us, keep the line moving, and get us the heck out of their hair.  So it may not be worth running all over town to find a PO you can hand cancel your invites.

ARGH!   This is why the Post Office is EVIL!

Thanks Off...I didn't think that the post office did that anyway, especially with  the volume of mail that the PO has to go through. As long as the invite is not smashed up on the inside, I'll be happy.

Oh boy! That scares me because I think it will ruin my invites totally.
Thanks for the head's up. I think I will get a better wrapping package (those bubbles envelopes, compare to the wrapping paper I bought!) which means more money. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Hey I'm crazyyy late but I'll tell you about my experience with this. I think it depends on the PO to go to. The one by me has a lady who was very helpful. I asked her about hand cancelling and she told me they do it there. The first 50 invites are done free of charge. Then, she said "it's something you'll WANT to do". She was helpful and made me feel better for asking (since I sounded clueless enough already). I think you should make sure you get a hold of their managers because every PO should be able to do this for you and not have you do it yourself.

Hand cancelling is a service the post office offers (or should be offering) that allows you to stamp envelopes by hand without going through the stamping machines. The machines have a tendency to stamp the outside of envelopes kind of dirty because it handles so much mail, so hand cancelling is supposed  to eliminate that. It's also to eliminate the envelope from getting ruined or bent.

Technically, we would want to do this with invites so they get to the addressee as pretty as possible. But, I don't think this is guaranteed because the invite may go through several machines. It's really a way to stop the envelope from going through one less machine, I guess.

Yeah my PO was totally willing let me hand cancel, but they told me regardless it was still going through a machine.  Everything is so automated and digital now everything has to go through a machine.  I just know a lot of us run around desperate to get invites hand cancelled and it doesn't seem to make a difference in how it's handled.  I think if your invite is flat it won't be a problem, Xmas and B-day cards make it ok Iso Im hoping my invites will too.

It depends on which PO you go to. FI's mom is the post master so she did it for all of my envelopes. It is NOT supposed to go through any machine because of the bar code or something like that.

I know i'm late but HTH somebody!
