Internal Wedding Band Conflict (PIP)

Hi ladies! I can't believe how close we are to wedding day! I've been tying up a lot of loose ends lately, but I big one will be crossed off the list today: my FI and I are going to design my wedding band. FI's band is being made out of the gold from his dad's and grandfather's wedding rings, which I think is lovely, and very sweet. My FMIL gave me some diamonds from her original band to use in my band.

Long story short: the diamonds are larger than what I planned to use in my band, and cannot figure out how to make it work with my e-ring (which we also designed). I want to honor her and use the stones she supplied, but I'm nervous that I'm going to walk away with a ring that I don't really like.  My gut instinct is to get a plain gold band. I love my e-ring so much that I don't want anything to detract from it.

Suggestions?  Thoughts?  I'm super-excited about the designed process, and will probably feel better once I work with the shop, but for now, I'm a ball of nerves!

  • Maybe tell her that you all have decided to go with the plain gold band, and ask if you could use her stones to make a necklace instead. You could wear it at the ceremony/reception/both and special occasions.

    Or earrings?

  • do you have pictures of them?

  • Has your FI talked to a jeweller about his ring yet? I hate to burst your bubble, but I wanted to use the gold from my mothers ring to make mine and I was told that it wasn't a good idea because when they melt down the gold it has to get purified again and you loose a lot in the process. Then when the ring is actually made, there's a possibility that there would be bubbles in the gold making the ring weaker and prone to cracking.

Regarding your ring, I would go with your gut and have earrings or some other piece of jewellery made.

Blerg!  I didn't know that. We took the rings to a jewelry store that his mother has gone to for decades. It is scheduled to arrive in less than a week. :( I hate to think that anything might happen to it.

Talk to your jeweller about it, they may say something different but that's what mine told me.

  • Your E ring is very pretty!!  I like the idea of seeing if earings or a necklace would be ok for using the stones.

  • I am just like this...and so for once, maybe I can give advice someone else has given me.......until you go to the jewler to actually start the process, you really can't make any kind of judgments...they will be able to direct you and if your anything like me...once you get there and start working on it, you will feel much better about the whole process and anxiety surrounding it.......if it doesn't work out tho...the earings or necklace is a fabulous idea!

  • i agree that you should see what the jewler suggests, but don't get a ring made that you don't love!  and i agree that having FMIL's diamonds made into an other piece would be lovely.  maybe ask her if that's okay though.
