Hey you alcoholics

This was posted on the Budget board, BevMo is running a buy one get one for five cents wine sale, among other sale stuff.

http://www.bevmo.com/

Just thought I'd share :)

What's good to buy, in a white wine? I like it but never know what to get!

Re: Hey you alcoholics

  • The problem with the sale (which I love) is that several states restrict where you can ship wine - GA being one of the states.  BevMo is only in California, Arizona and maybe Washington and Nevada.  I'm hoping I can get a couple of cases when I'm out there tomorrow.
  • bbyckes- thanks for the info I would have been really bummed if I had actually tried to get some! (i'm in alt as well)
  • I like Sauvignon Blanc a lot. I can usually find a pretty decent one for around $15. What I have in my fridge right now is Robert Mondavi SB. I drink it sometimes, but mostly cook with it. I'm not one of those people that uses wine I wouldn't drink to cook with. If I wouldn't drink it, why use it as an ingredient?

If you like your wine on the sweeter side, a Riesling is good. Try to go for a German one, they make a hell of a Reisling. It's dessert wine.

  • Whit, if you like sweeter wines (hence, the white wine likeage) you should try Gewurtztraminer, and maybe a Pinot Noir.  It's red, but it's very light and sweeter.  My mom loves Riesling too.

I prefer red, but drink a fair amount of white.  I dislike Chardonnay, and I haven't met a Soave that I like either.  I have had this before and like it: http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?N=39+4294967149+182&area=wine&No=20&ProductID=4488&Ns=Name|0
  • I LOVE Riesling.  It's my favorite.

    I don't think I've tried a Riesling that I don't like.
  • Thanks for the wines! I definitely prefer sweet wines, I'm a cheap drunk who likes Arbor Mist! Haha. :)

I like Gewurtztraminer and Reisling. There is a reisling called Funf 5 that I get for $6/bottle at Sprouts, and its awesome!

I also like Verdhe (many different spellings). My fave is Casal Garcia. It also runs about $6-$8 per bottle.

ETA: 3 Blind moose is good too. Of course, I usually pick wine by how cute the label is. We have been experimenting a lot lately, though, trying to pick wines for the reception, so I've gotten better!

  • I just spoke to the USPS and they restrict shipping across state lines and beverage that contains more than 0.05% alcohol by volume.  I'm not sure about its competitors though,.

If you like Washington Reds, I'd try Red Diamond Merlot and Sauvignon.  Reisling and the wine Amoro mentioned are good sweet white wines.  If you like those, you'll also like a Moscato as well.
  • Yeah, that's how most girls are Whit. lol That's how I started too.  But since they don't really do sweet wines here, I had to adjust.  FAST. :D
  • Time to try a Riesling for sure then! I'm picking up wine tonight because my BM/random friend is coming into town, so I want some good stuff. And she's got the same cheap taste for sweet wines that I do :)

  • Also, if it tastes like grape juice I'd drink it.

  • If you can find ice wine, you should try thta too.  It's not to be drunk in large amounts, as it's higher in alcohol content, and sweeter but OMG is it good.  mmmmm
  • What is this ice wine you speak of? I tried processo, I think you mentioned it one time Amoro. Loved it!

  • Does anyone know why Reislings usually come in blue bottles? I don't think I've ever bought Reisling that wasn't in a blue bottle.

  • I just thought about this Whit. Lambic beer. I don't know of any brand other than Lindeman's but that stuff is way too tasty. They make it in raspberry, peach, green apple, and black cherry, that I know of. It's classified as a beer, but tastes much more like wine and is pretty sweet.  It's on the pricey side and you'd probably have to go to a specialty wine or liquor store to get it, but I like it a lot.

  • As Sarah suggested, vinho verde is yummy. It's a lightly sparkling white from Portugal, really nice for summer (or pretending it's summer). I like Aveleda, which they have at BevMo.
  • I'm with Lauren. I like German and Austrian reislings. I'll also drink savignon blanc. Not much of a chardonnay fan. I'm more of a beer and liquor person though, so I can't say I have any specific recommendations.

Oh, and this is an awesome suggestion.  I hate beer.  I love this stuff.  Raspberry and green apple are the best.  One of the grocery chains here carries it, actually, as does whole foods and liquor barn.

  • Sorry guys!  I was off fighting with people!

Ice wine is made when grapes are left to frost or freeze on the vines, and then are picked.  The guys picking actually have to wear special gloves to keep their hands cold so they don't remove any of the frost from the berry.  Then the grapes are pressed and fermented like normal wine.  They're just kept cold.  Because they get frozen while on the vine, it condenses the sugars and makes it more like a liquer so it's a dessert wine.

Amoro, that sounds similar to late harvest wine.  The grapes are left on the vine to ripen until they almost go bad, so the sugars really concentrate.  So.Damn.Good.
  • Whit, if you like sweet drinks and have a Whole Foods nearby (not sure if those are regional or not) try the Honey Mead. It's like drinking delicious flavored honey and you will be knocked on your butt after 2 glasses.
  • I really like Red Diamond, too, but I'll usually pick their Chardonnay--really buttery.  For Sauvignon Blanc, I would suggest something from New Zealand.  Kim Crawford, Veramonte are really good SVs but I enjoy the Monkey Bay, too, and it's a little less expensive.  New Zealand has gone mostly to screw caps now to save the cork trees.  When I do have a taste for something sweeter, I, too, enjoy a Moscato Asti.  The only red I ever order is a Rosemont Shiraz on occasion.   I do love wine!
